Sometimes .... If you change the power management settings (Control Panel / Power Options / Advanced) --- you should be able to change the behavior of the laptop to "do nothing" when you shut the lid.

Please let me know if this is helpful or if you have any other questions.

Hi, If have a desktop computer try first to connect your laptop to the external monitor. If that work with display then the problem are (1) the video cable from the system board to the monitor is broken. (2) inverter or the LCD is shut. Laptop Monitor Problem - I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. I had a system crash and I think I may have had a second problem with my monitor on my laptop showing, it went black and flickers on and off. ...

Possible disconnect of the wiring harness from the LCD to the motherboard? Might just need a new screen, but always check the simplest first. Flickering may imply faulty wiring or a lose connection in my opinion.

I just took samsung 23 inch led monitor out of the box, got it working for about 10 minutes, then pushed a button and now all it does is recycle the Digital/HDMI/Analogs indicators on the upper left of...

I assume you have it connected to an external monitor output on the laptop. The laptop's operating system probably identified the monitor when it was first plugged in, but somehow pressing the button changed the monitor's identity as far as the laptop is concerned - maybe there is an incompatibility in the resolution setting. The laptop has apparently shut down the external video port.

Turn off the monitor, but leave it connected to the laptop. Restart the laptop and turn the monitor on when the laptop brings up its BIOS screen (begins the startup process). When the operating system gets started, it should recognize the monitor again.

What operating system are you using, and what kind of connection are you making with the laptop (DVI, VGA, HDMI)?

Is it possible to bypass the built in screen monitor(compac 7770 DMT) and connect to another computer monitor. I bought my laptop at the local goodwill store and the monitor just looks like wet splatter....

1) connect your external monitor to the 7770DMT and switch it on
2) boot up the laptop
3) after it has successfully booted, you need to identify which function key toggles the external monitor on/off
4) you should be able to do this by holding down the Fn key and trying each of the F keys in turn, waiting a few seconds after pressing each one
5) begin by holding down "Fn" + "F3", "Fn" + "F4", "Fn" + "F5" etc.

Problem with Fan - Dell Laptop Inspiron B130 ?

Hello,

If the fan is dead, then the laptop will shut itself off after a short while to prevent heat damage. It is normal for the fan to spin up when you turn on the laptop and then stop turning. The fan will kick in again when it is needed as heat builds up. The system fan has absolutely nothing to do with the lcd lighting up.......seriously.

If the laptop is running, but the screen goes dark after a few seconds, it sounds more like the backlight on the lcd panel is shot. From what you describe, I assume that your lcd is not 'lit up' at all, but you can see a faint image on the screen. If this is the case, then either the inverter board is shot, or the backlight for the lcd panel is dead. You can try calling Dell at 1-800-www-dell and try to purchase an inverter board. They are cheap, and it would be worth the gamble to buy one, because if the backlight is shot, then you need a new lcd panel - $350+ (the backlight is part of it and not replaceable). The inverter board is located at the bottom of the display module, right behind the dell logo at the bottom of the display. It's quite easy to get at.

Here's a good test. Shut the laptop off, and attach a computer monitor to the 15 pin vga connector at the left side of the laptop. Turn on the laptop and the monitor should show you an image. If not, try holding the blue 'fn' key and press and release the f8 key. This should switch you over to the external monitor. If the laptop works fine when connected to an external monitor but has no image, then it's definitely not the fan, and you should try an inverter board. If still no good with a new inverter board, you can still use the laptop with an external monitor.

Hope this helps!.......let me know how you make out.

My Aunt has an Acer laptop that she would like to hook up to a monitor. She has macular degeneration and cannot read the screen so she wants to hook it up to her specialized monitor. How would she do this?

You can connect the monitor to the laptop only if your laptop has a VGA plug and the monitor has the right connector.
The connector on the laptop it's usually blue in the center with 15 holes. If your not sure please post your type of laptop model and I will check it out and guide you to your connector.

If you succeed in connecting the screen turn your monitor on and turn laptop on. I know you will say nothing happens on screen, and that's because you need to hold down on the "FN" or function key and press "F4" at the same time, only once. If Nothing happens try again. Know your monitor on laptop will shut off if the screen does turn on, it's normal. Please let me know if you have any luck!
