Question about Fellowes Powershred SB-87Cs Shredder

1 Answer

The Auto-On switch does not work. I have to manually turn the shredder on and then feed paper into the slot. It feeds and shreds the paper just fine, but I have to manually turn it off to stop it. All of the safety features seem to be working fine. I've cleaned and lubricated as described in the instruction manual. ??

There must be an auto-on/off sensor in the middle of the paper entrance slot - either mechanical or optical. It needs to be cleaned from any obstructions like paper chads or paper dust.It this doesn't help, the sensor maybe defective and it needs to be replaced.

My Staples 16 sheet Microcut shredder starts the shredding operation after I push the button and continues the shredding operation after I shred a paper. How can I get the shredding mechanism to stop...

It's a tedious process to clean it out. Most auto switch shredders use either a tiny little lever or an optical sensor in the paper feed slot. Usually removing the shred head, picking all the paper out and blasting all the dust out with air will clean it up. Then run a few sheets of paper with shredder lubricant (basically clean mineral oil) to oil the blades and it should be good to go again. Just be careful cleaning that cutting head. I've donated many drops of blood to office equipment over the years.

How do I fix my auto feed, which has stopped working?

Use a flashlight to examine the shredder from the top and look for a shred of paper blocking the slot. The shred may also be blocking the sensor. If you don't find anything, turn the shredder upside down to examine the shredding mechanism from the bottom.

My shredder worked fine but now when I turn on it does not stop running and does not shred paper ?

Most shredders will have a shred and a reverse setting. Is it running in reverse? Has the bin been emptied? With the power off, you can remove the bin and manually pull excess shredded paper jammed in the cutting heads -watch out, sharp metal . Once cleared run single sheets for the first minute to help clear rollers.

I have a Staples SPL77M shredder. It stopped automatically feeding paper when placed in the feed slot and now requires the forward button be pressed and held down to shred paper. If the on/off switch is...

IF YOU LOOK INTO THE SLOT WHERE YOU FEED THE PAPER...GET A FLASHLIGHT ........IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SLOT YOU WILL SEE A TINY SWITCH. THAT THING SOMETIMES GETS GUMMED UP WITH GLUE FROM ENVELOPES AND SUCH... TRY SOME WD-40 ON THAT SWITCH... WITH THE MACHINE UNPLUGGED PUT PAPER IN THE SLOT TO MOVE THE SWITCH SO THE WD-40 CAN LOOSEN UP ANYTHING .... THEN TRY BLOWING AIR IN IT....
ARE YOU SURE THAT THE TOP OF THE SHREDDER IS SITTING FLUSH WITH THE PORTION IT RESTS ON??? THAT COULD ALSO MAKE IT NOT WORK..... OR IF THE BASKET NEEDS EMPTYING THE TOP WONT REST FLUSH ON THE BASKET.

Only runs in reverse

I just had this problem with my shredder. I think the problem started with a bin that was full. Running the shredder in reverse resulted in shredded paper being pulled up into the slot used to feed paper into the shredder. Some of this shredded paper was blocking the little plastic tab that activates the switch when paper is inserted, so the shredder would no longer start when paper was inserted. I emptied the bin and removed the shredded paper from the feed slot, being careful not to break the plastic "sensor" while removing the paper from under it. The shredder works fine now.

Automatic Shredding

I personally work with Fellowes brand shredders, but it sounds like you have a paper feed sensor issue. This may be a mechanical or electronic sensor located in the center of the paper feed slot. If it is electronic it may just need cleaning(qtip dipped in rubbing alchohol. If it is a mechanical sensor check to make sure it has not been broken or it may be stuck because of paper that has become wedged behind it(you may need to jiggle the switch a few times to free it). If none of this works you may have a burned out switch or a bad pc1.gif board, contact manufacturer for more info.
