I was uploading pics when accidentally I clicked on a video file, then suddenly my PC showed that the temporary camera drive was not responding. I disconnected my Nikon D40 carefully from the PC. However, since then my Nikon doesn't power up. Any clues? I need the camera for an event that will happen within 4 days. I would appreciate any help.
Re: I was downloading pics when suddenly my PC showed
I just want to give you one more option that Steve did not mention. It is a bit of a duhh action, but did you take the battery out and let it sit for a few hours? Try that, and then when you go to plug it in to the computer again, use a different USB port. (Thatt is of course if it powers back up after the battery removal.)

I couldn't find any service advisories on your camera from Nikon, so there are no known issues affecting this model camera. Since this an expensive camera and has many precision moving parts, dis-assembly is not recommended. You should remove the memory card and battery. Fully charge the battery to make sure the battery isn't contributing to the problem, reinstall a different memory card (to rule out corrupted data on the card) and try to power up again. If another card is not available, read the card in a stand alone SDHC card reader (if available), save any images / videos if desired and format the card before inserting into the camera.
Failing this, you'll probably have to arrange for service from Nikon (or an authorized service center). Contact Nikon Service & Repair below:

I would start by clearing out your cookies, then I would do a disk defragment to clear out old stuff your computer is loading. If you have desktop widgets or are running programs that take up a lot of memory. Go to Start, Control panel, internet options, and click to delete temporary files and then after go into programs, accessories and disc defragment. Hope it helps!
Hello, Most modern cameras allow direct file copying. All you need to do is to 1) Connect the camera to your computer using the USB able that came along with your camera. 2) Now the pc will detect the camera and show it as a storage device, just like it would show a pen drive. 3) Now you can open the newly detected storage and there you will find the pictures taken with your camera.Look inside all folder available within the drive to find your pics. 4) Now you can simple copy the pics there and paste in on any folder/drive on your computer hard disk like you would copy any other file.i.e,simply selecting all the files you need to upload to your pc,right click and then select the option Copy, and then browsing to any folder on your hard disk, right click and then select paste.
That sounds like you don't have the proper codec to play AVI files. Even if you haven't had problems with AVI's before these files may be DIVX avi's instead of the usual Xvid. Download the full codec pack here: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm and install it. Restart your computer and try again and you shouldn't have any problems. Please rate, thanks!

get a memory card reader and try to download pics from card to comp-then open and click any folders you see related to memory card-card will show up as a new drive letter in my computer-pics may be in different folder and still be there-if you can't find pics at all go to sandisk.com and get recovery software to see if you can still retrive them
Using a proprietary data cable, download to your PC, then upload to your phone.
If you have a compatible data card reader on your PC:
1. download directly from your data card onto your PC hard drive, 2. insert your new data card,
3. goto my computer and then drag and drop the files you want into your new data card.
I had the same problem, what I did is I executed AVG anti virus software and selected the camcorder drive, I was able to see all the folder names. My camcorder shows as E drive but when I open by double clicking it shows only hidden folder, so I entered in the address as follows E:\MP_ROOT\101PNV01 for videos and E:\DCIM\101MSDCF for photos and I was able copy all my data. Your folders may be different I don't know if there is any other way of knowing your folder names but if you want to download the anti virus software which I used go to link http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff.
I just purchased a frame and wondered the same thing. My computer has a slot for an SD card once inserted the computer shows the SD file. Then go into where you store the pictures highlight the picture one at a time in the picture file my program says copy to file click on it and shows the SD file as F file click copyit then downloads to the card. Done put SD card in frame worked perfectly.
