Toro Power Clear 418 ZE Snow Blower won't stay started

The main jet of your carb is clogged and you need to open carb and clear the obstruction - spray carb cleaner on the bolt that holds the gas container to bottom of carb - also spray all the innards along with any tube that protrudes into the gas can.

Then using air compressor blow the sucker out and reassemble. That should do it.

I have a toro personal pace that wont start ?

Remove the air box cover and air filter. Spray a shot of carb cleaner into the throat of the carb. Try to start. If it hits and runs for a second then you have a fuel problem, ie. water in fuel, clogged jet in carb, etc. If it wont try and run then its likely another issue, either in ignition or compression.

My Toro Model 20070 that until now has always started on the first pull, won't start at all now. It started fine last week. It's getting spark (a little more yellow than blue). I replaced the plug,...

Hold the butterfly valve (behind air filter) open with a screwdriver, while somebody else tries to start it. Toro has had problems with atuomatic chokes. If it fires right up, thats the problem! If so, just wire it open, or contact Toro for a repair kit. Try using starting fluid, not carb cleaner, and spray directly into the head through the spark plug port. If you didn't do it already, blow out all the ports in the carb with compressed air, or carb cleaner. Also, be sure the safety lever is engaging correctly (top bar on handle) at the engine. Lawn mowers are pretty simple, so the problem is most likely simple too.

I have a 6.0 hp briggs GTS on a Toro push mower. The only way I can can get it to start is by using starting fluid. It will start easily and will only stay running as long as I continue to spray fluid into...

Did you clean all the tiny holes in the brass bolt that hold the float bowl on to the main carb body? This is the main jet of the carb. Find and clean the small hole in it's bottom, and along the sides near the top. Carb/Choke spray cleaner works well here. If you remove, clean (till shiny, using no metal objects on it) and reinstall, you fuel flow problems may be over. Install an inline filter always.

This sounds like the carb is plugged. Sometimes fuel thickens and makes globs...

If you verified the fuel flow to the inlet of the carb, then you need to take the carb off and open it up....
So, what needs to happen is you blow out all of the passageways with carb cleaner.

Any adjustable jets: make note of the position it is in, and FINGER TIGHT turn it clockwise until it closes (typically 1 to 1 1/2 turns) SOOOOO, you can set this jet back to the same positon....when finished blowing everything out, bottom the jet and back out the number of turns out, noted for that jet.

Open the float chamber, and clean as necessary, Inspect the float adjustment: invert the carb, and observe the angle of the float, relative to the carb body.... Usually almost parallel, but not necessarily.
Inspect the inlet valve, and clean those areas...

I usually use all new gaskets and valves, but if you are not a carb person, cleaning is effective and I think old gaskets may be okay, if not torn or damaged.

Honda elite 80 scooter. fuel was left in for over one year. will fire over as lng as carb cleaner spayed in. cleaned bowl. and carb cleaner seems to flow from fuel intake to bowl. but with fuel line back...

I would remove the carb and then the float bowl, jets and fittings and soak the carb and parts in de-natured alcohol for an hour. The alcohol will dissolve varnish buildup from dried fuel. Have a thin wire on hand to aid in clearing fuel circuits in the carb body. The wire on a service tag such a used on Stihl chainsaws works well. Now use a spray carb cleaner to spray into every fitting and hole in the carb body. Spray into both ends of each circuit. Wear gloves and goggles. Done properly, this and a new spark plug should do the trick. Set the spark plug gap to .30

Totr model #20479 GTS 5 motor, when you push prime

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

Only runs on choke and idle (nothing in between).

JEO You are correct. Way too expensive, and I have seen a 50% success rate at replacing the inlet needle. Some carbs can have the seat replaced, but the success rate on that was only 75%. A new carb was the only solution I could find in 20 plus years of fighting this monster.
You CAN soak the carb with ALL of its parts, 15-30 minutes should do it, and if you are uneasy about the plastic. Make sure to remove all of the jets that you can find, even an extra one in the center of the carb that is hard to see. The carb cleaner today is not as strong as in the early 70's when I started, and had parts disappear if you soaked too long.
Finally to ease the leaking problem, install an in-line shut-off valve between the tank and carb. There is not much room, but it sure beats a new carb at over $150 on an old mower. (it really is a good mower, and compared to today's, is far superior)
