Was cleaning rubber gasket for mold and noticed when I cleaned inside outer lip of steel drum a lot of brown sludge-is this grease for drum or is this build-up of some sort that should be cleaned? Also-do...

The brown sludge you are finding should NOT be grease as the bearings for the drum are sealed. This may be soap scum build up, and a combination of mold or mildew if you have been leaving the door shut between washes. It is strongly recommended by the manufacturer that you leave the door open when not in use to allow the drum air out. This aids in preventing mold, mildew and odors. The following link explains some of the common causes of front loader odors and how to remedy the problem:

As far as the water fill hoses are concerned, the hoses are usually good for about 5-10 years (rubber), 10-15 years (stainless steel). They usually only require replacement if the rubber begins to crack or dry rot and/or begin leaking. A general inspection of the entire length of hose, cleaning the sediment screens in the ends of the hoses (if equipped) and replacing the gasket at the fitting will extend the life of the hoses. Replacing the hose has nothing to do with preventing odors. Odors are generally caused by not leaving the tub open to air out, using too much (or improper) detergent which causes soap scum build up, or a clogged drain trap. The following link explains how to access and clean out the drain trap:

I personally own a washer similar to yours and have never had any problems with mold, mildew, or odors, by following this regiment. If you have any questions or concerns, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Why do I get the sewage smell when the front load washer first throws the water out. Help me , it is really bad.

The odor that you are experiencing may be from the growth of mold. Inside the washer, some small pools of water may be left standing and is harboring mold spores. Even though you may operate the washer regularly, the mold spores are not being washed away.I have a couple of tips that might help to eliminate odor issues in your washing machine. First, leave the lid, or door to the unit open after every wash for a week. By leaving the door open, it promotes air circulation and evaporation of standing water. The reduction in odor, will occur quickly and dramatically.

My second tip is to run the washer empty for a quick rinse cycle. Add an entire cup of bleach at the start of the cycle. The bleach is effective at destroying organisms, such as mold and bacteria. However, running it once will not be completely effective. I suggest pouring another cup of bleach into the wash tub, after the cycle has completed. This will leave bleach as the standing pool and should prevent the growth of mold or bacteria. However, if you do this, before doing a load of laundry you should run an empty rinse cycle again(warm), to avoid damage to the clothes from the bleach left standing in the wash tub.

Bad smell when starting a new load the next day

These are some good tips. However, leaving the door open between loads decreases odor by drying out the residue which can make the residue difficult to remove. Also, the residue will affect the next wash load.

The only way to have a truly clean washer is to remove the odor-causing residue. The "splash area" just 3-5 inches above the normal waterline is where the worst buildup is. To clean the whole tub use a washer cleaner that is able to be used with clothing in the washer. The added laundry will raise the water level to include the splash area.
There are many washer cleaners on the market. Some are all natural and can be used with laundry to safely clean inside the washing machine. After you get rid of odor you'll need to change your washing habits so it doesn't come back.

Stale odor within tub

Front loaders are known for building up mold and the smell.
It’s caused by using liquid detergent which is made from animal fat. Use powder. And use the minimum amount.
It’s caused by using fabric softener. Dilute it 50/50 with water.
It’s caused by the water remaining in the tub between washes. Leave the door open to allow it to dry. .
Pull the rubber door seal back and clean the mold off .
Affresh is recommended by some manufacturers. You run it through a wash cycle with it.

The washer emits a foul odor when washer first

You have the beginning of a detergent and/or softener residue buildup on the inside of the plastic outer drum of your clothes washing machine. Mold and bacteria need a moist, dark environment and a food source to grow. This residue is the food source. This can be a major health concern. See: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5408971n

We can't change the environment of the washer but we can lessen the "food source" by reducing detergent and fabric softener use.
Do an internet search on "Smelly Washer Reviews" to see what you can do about the problem of mold odor in your washer, towels and clothing.
After your washer odor is gone you'll need to change washing habits so mold and bacteria don't return. Go to the blog page at smellywasher.com to read the featured posts on the left side of the page on the cause of the problem and what to do for extreme cases of washer mold odor.

Towel mildew smell is being transferred from the washer. The washer must be cleaned first. The problem is not "brand specific" all clothes washers have mold growth to a certain degree. Bleach or vinegar will kill the mold inside your washer but won't remove it or the residue it grows on thereby making the situation worse because it leaves a "base" for more detergent to collect on and more mold will grow.

Washing machine mold / mildew odor is caused by:
#1 cause is overuse of detergents. Detergent companies are notorious for instructing to use too much detergent. Especially with soft water or when using liquid detergent no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
#2 most common cause is using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle and will coat the inside of the outer tub with residue that is a food source for mold to grow.
#3 using only cold water for washing is fine but makes preventative maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve odor-causing residue from inside your washer.
#4 not using the washer. If the clothes washer isn't used very often maintenance is especially important. If leaving for a vacation it's a good idea to clean your washer. Do a search to "remove washer odor" to read just how big the problem is. There are all natural washer cleaners that will also remove mildew odor from towels and clothing after the washer has been cleaned.

The following link provides guidance on how to maintain a front loader to keep the mold, mildew and odor away:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r513372-front_loader_mildew_odor

These are recommendations provided by the manufacturer. Most important of all, keep the rubber bellow clean and clear of debris and make sure you leave the door slightly open when not in use. This will minimize the build up of any mold or mildew and allow the tub to air out. The odor typically comes from the the residual water that stays in the wash tub under the basket and small articles of clothing getting stuck in the rubber folds of the door bellow. (I once found 17 socks stuck in a customer's washer and they wondered why it smelled so bad). NOTE: It is NORMAL to have residual water in the wash tub. If you do not routinely use a hot water setting, run the washer on a sanitary cycle about once a week, or so, with a small amount of bleach to get rid of any bacteria. Since some users conserve and only wash in cold water, they do not bacteria get rid of any bacteria inside the wash tub. I personally own one of these washers and have never had any odor or mildew problems in 8 years by following this simple advice. If you have any further questions/concerns please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Foul smell

More then likely you're still using too much detergent and liquid softner. Front load washers use about 1/10 the water of a top load so all you need to use is about 1 tablespoon per load of soap and softner. If you use any more then that it builds up inside the tub behind the drum where you can't see it and starts to smell. Running the machine empty about once a month with just bleach will help stop the build up. If you do this and see soap suds that's left over soap coming out. If you see suds run it again and again until the water stays clear and you odor problem should be gone. You can go back to colored towels.

Build up of black "gook"

I also have had issues with a bad smelling LG Tromm 2277 washer when we leave the door closed after using it. One note on the LG site mentions that soap/scum buildup on the washer drum can encourage mold growth. They suggested running an empty wash load and then pause it after the water fills and add a hot tub cleaning product (Whirl Out - I got it at Lowe's) and restart the load. This stuff should help remove the soap scum and limit the smelly mold growth. My washer does not smell as bad after using it. I also have run an empty cycle with only bleach using the very hot sanitary load setting.
