try a few things, your printer maintenance my need to be adjusted, such as settings. i have one at work and i hate it, canon printers are so non-user friendly. do you have both a black and a color cartridge in it, if so you will have to tell it in the maintenance settings, if you only have one or the other installed you have to put both in it wont print with only one cartridge. if you just bought it and still have everything that it came with...take it back and buy a lexmark.

It means that not all contacts are working.
1. Try this first - unplug the printer for a minute from the power supply and then replug.
2. Make sure you have removed ALL packaging materials from the printer. Details can be found here
3. Try to reseat the ink cartridge. Details here.
If the steps above dont work, then the issue you describe seems to indicate that your product requires repair service. If you feel your product might require service, a Technical Support Representative will be happy to answer any questions you may have and explain the service options available to you. You can contact Canon through the email link or phone numbers listed below.
* There will be a pay for support charge if your product is out of warranty (see next section, below).

First thing to check is that the left hand paper guide (as you look at the printer from the front) is up tight against the edge of the paper stack in the feeder. I've seen many printers where (over the course of day to day use) the paper guide has progressively moved itself to the left so that the paper is not held at all. The pick-up for the paper is at the bottom right hand corner and if the guide is loose the paper can skew as it goes in - and then it only gets worse.
Another possibility (and this has just happened to me) is that the long piece of sponge that runs the length of the platen (you'll only see it if you open the top and shine a light in) has come adrift slightly. Mine actually came completely out after 2 or three skewed/crumpled sheets. I washed it, dried it out with kitchen towel and then carefully refitted it. Now the printer is running like a demon.
Let us know what your outcome is.
