Hi Everyone,
Reading all your good posts, I think I will retire my old 45 XL GPS to paperweight status and just get something state of the art to use in my homebuilt airplane. Of course, I will stay in touch with Linux postings that might contain some kind of software reload to at least use it on walks to track mileage. Thanks FixYa for such a great page.

Cheers-Bill

Usually, it is not possible to upgrade the cpu on a laptop. In rare cases where it is possible the upgrade usually costs nearly as much as a new laptop.
However, you can significantly upgrade the laptop's performance by adding more memory and by replacing the old slow hard drive.
Your Sony VGN-Z250 is usually supplied with 3GB of RAM memory. You can replace the existing memory modules with a new kit consisting of 2 x 2GB modules (total 4GB). The type of memory you need is "SO-DIMM" (meaning laptop size) DDR3 - 1066MHz (you may use 1333MHz memory but it will only run at 1066MHz speed). I would suggest either G-Skill or Crucial brand memory. And you can replace the hard drive with an SSD. You'll be amazed at the boost this provides, seriously. I would suggest either Samsung 840 EVO or Sandisk Ultra for an SSD. Both offer super-fast performance compared to your old spinning hard drive, and both have very low power consumption so they run cool and give your laptop a few extra minutes of battery power. You can clone/copy your existing Windows setup onto the SSD using free Macrium Reflect software or free software from the SSD maker's website. Or, you can do a fresh install of Windows.

I just bought a new Dell N7010 laptop. It runs very slow compared to my Dell D610. I do have Webroot and Mcaffey installed. Any suggestions. The 7010 has Win7 Home Premium.

Try to use AVIRA AntiVirus Free on www.avira.com, its a free and very Powerfull AntiVirus software, and it doesn't slow your machine.

Good Luck

Hi i have compaq presario c700 its too slow discr

If you have changed OS, your problem probably is not due to malware or bloat.
Upgraded to 2gb ram, new hard drive. And still you think it is too slow.
I think either you are too fussy, and expect too much OR your laptop has major problems at a chipset level.
Have you tried running some benchmark software to check if it really is running slow???

I would Do a fresh install of windows, SELL it and change to a different model.
Try checking a couple of reviews on sites like Custom PC, for a good fast laptop.

New printer problem

Check that you did not install a 64-bit driver on a 32-bit system, Vista driver on Windows 7, etc. unless that is what your system specifically requires. Do not install the full package either, download the link on the website that says "driver only". A lot of the software printers install are kinda crappy because they assume you have no picture editing software, scanning software, etc. They are usually really cheap bloated software suits that don't compare to some of the more mainstream office products.

If it is getting very slow at booting up and doing everything it is well worth wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. Your performance should then be the same as it was when new.

If it is only slow at running the latest graphic-intensive games you should upgrade hardware. Processor, video card, and faster ram will give you the best improvements there.

Upgrading my laptop processor

When you're running an average load, start Task Manager and view the performance tab. If the amount of free RAM is low, then definately upgrade your RAM. Plus, nowadays it's really cheap to upgrade ram.
As far as upgrading your processor, that can get a little tricky and expensive.
Also, what do you mainly use your computer for, and what operating system do you use?

My computer

Your PC isn't really old at 8 months. Most systems can be upgraded with more memory, a faster processor, larger hard drive, new hardware, and the list goes on. Are you running Windows XP? Windows Vista, is the latest OS from Microsoft, but I understand that XP is still supported. I guess the short answer would be to ask yourself: does it do what you need it to do? For example, I upgraded from my previous PC when I decided to do more stuff with DVD editing, and my old PC was a bit too slow to handle the higher speeds needed for editing video files to DVD's. You might as mentioned ealier in my post inquire about upgrading your PC instead. Figure out the costs, and then compare the costs with those of just buying a new PC. Then after comparing both options make your decision based on what you feel best meets your needs. PS: I still run Windows ME on an Intel Celeron 750 mhz laptop; for what I use it for it still works okay...BNG

"Upload ...Not Present" message. Nothing else on the screen. I replaced the internal battery last spring used it all summer. Have just checked internal and external batteries and all are fresh 3v internal and new AA four batteries. Upon startup the screen says "Upload" "Not Present" and there is no menu. I have tried hitting Page and Menu, etc. nothing happens. I tried leaving it out and on for 3 hours to see if it would find itself and satellites. I tried connecting to the computer and uploading the internal program the port was not found. Tried this a number of times and a number of ways. I have tried leaving it on to search for 3 hours and have tried to connect to my computer to reinstall the software but that does not work. The internal battery was replaced with a new one last year. I have fresh batteries in the unit. What is the problem? How do I fix it? Thank you. I love this unit and would like to keep it going. I have fixed two others for friends who needed the internal battery fixed. They use it as a backup. I have tried the Auto Locate procedure about 3 times. I have also tried clearing by holding the PAGE + Power. Then tried autolocate. Message "Upload... Not Present" still remains. Also have tried clearing by holding the MARK + Power. Then tried autolocate. Message "Upload... Not Present" still remains. Now I am wondering if this message has to do with an interrupted connection with EasyGPS from last winter. I was uploading waypoints, and thought it had completed and may have turned off and disconnected the plug before an operation was completed in saving waypoints off the Garmin 48. I do not know this for a fact, but that was the last operation I recall doing last fall, before starting the GPS up again on the boat this spring. I have also tried to connect the unit to Easy GPS via the serial port, thinking perhaps it would complete whatever it is trying to do. I have tried uploading routes and downloading routes via EasyGPS send and recieve and it does not seem to work. I wonder now if the interface setting has been reset, by my pressing PAGE+power and Mark + Power earlier. I would not mind that if the menus came up properly, but that is not happening. Is there some other way to kick it out of this mode? I turn it on and there is the message "Upload...Not present" and none of the menu buttons work to get it into the normal startup screen mode..... I've tried Quit, Page, Enter, Goto, Mark, Power (off and on), and none of the get the computer out of this mode and back into the normal menus for startup. I've removed the antennae and checked all the contacts and that seems fine, and reinstalled. Is there some small reboot button inside that I can jumper? I have tried taking the internal battery out and letting it sit for three days and it still does the same thing. Any suggestions would be appreciated
