Acer laptop screen flicker-replacement screen next?

My Travelmate 2480 has flickering with horizontal lines so bad I can barely make out the display. I have replaced the cable and the inverter. I also happens at boot so it could not be OS (I assume, since the OS is not loaded at boot, right?). My next step is the most costly, LCD screen replacement. Video is fine with external display so I do not believe it is the mainboard. Anything else?

Moving the screen does not help. I needed to replace the broken hinge bracket so there was probably some flexing. (This was my daughter's, who used to "fix"it by slapping both sides of the display until that no longer worked.)
I am not sure what you mean by "normal" mode. I just connected the VGA cable to the external monitor and pressed the Fn set to get a display, which was fine.

Also, please not that I have replaced the cable and inverter so I am pretty sure it is not a loose cable. Pressing on them at various points does not seem to affect the display, although some times the displays gets somewhat stable and sometimes gets crazy.

I have checked the connections many times - before replacement, and after replacement.

Does this happen as soon as you power the laptop up or does this just happen when it loads the operating system? At boot, which is why I feel it is not an OS issue.

I am being asked to do all the things I stated I had done in my initial support request.

This is a known problem. All reviews way this:" We found the 2480's silver-and-black case compact and aesthetically pleasing. Flipping open the lid reveals a 14.1-inch, 1280 x 800-pixel widescreen display. As with the 2480's screen looked a bit washed out and dull, even with the brightness settings cranked."

The reports all point to this being the biggest drawback.

Does it make any difference with adapter plugged to power &/or batteries.
The problem as you have already deduced is the LCD screen itself....................................................sodeep
PS: this is a budget product so........................

Hi,
When you adjust the angle of the screen does the display get any better or does it get worse?

You say you have tested the laptop with an external monitor, did you test it in normal mode?

I'm asking this because we have to rule out the inverter or possible loose cables first before we come to the conclusion that it is the screen.

    Hi,
    Apologies for the delay.

OK, you have made a good start by checking and replacing the cables and inverter, so that rules them out.
You say your daughter has to slap the screen at each end to fix the problem before.
What i suggest you do is check that the ribbon cable that runs up at the back of the screen itself, it runs to the top back of the screen.
If you remove that cable connector and then reseat it making sure it's nice and tight this may sort out the problem.
I don't know if you noticed when you disassembled the screen that the cables are fairly compact so there's not much room for play. Constant opening and closing of the laptop lid can and does pull these cables out of the socket slightly causing the screen display to act weird. tapping or slapping the screen edges can make the problem worse by dislodging the cables even further.

If you check on the ribbon cable and then boot the laptop up to see if you have any change.

Just another quick question, does this happen as soon as you power the laptop up or does this just happen when it loads the operating system?

    Regards.

    Hi,
You have every reason not to suspect the OS as it's happening at boot. That's clear indication that the problem is hardware not software.

There's just one more thing you can do before coming to the final conclusion that this is screen replacement. you have done all the troubleshooting you possibly can now so my advice to you now is to go back and check all connections, pay particular attention to the connector on the motherboard. make sure none of the brass pins on the connector socket are bent.

If your still having the same result when you have re-checked all the connections i think it's safe to say that a new LCD screen will be in order.

Please let me know if you require anymore assistance.

    Good luck.

I haveMy compaq presario CQ40 and my monitor screen got flicker always for past few days and more red horizantal lines @bottom of the screen, where i couldn't see the data,time,date... Plz help me...

This is usually a sign of either a bad LCD screen cable, a bad LCD screen, or a bad display adapter.
If you connect an external monitor & you get a picture without these red horizontal lines, then your display adapter is OK.
Diagnosing a bad LCD screen cable or a bad LCD screen requires that you disassemble the LCD screen panel, & swap them one at a time with a matching part. This way you can identify which part is causing the problem & replace it.

Screen is flicking again and agin Model is ACER Travelmate 5730

If the screen flickers when the lid is moved, then it is most likely the LCD ribbon cable has a bad connection to the LCD controller board. If it flickers without lid movement, then it is probably the inverter module for the LCD, but if it flickers constantly and especially if there are white lines that stay constant accross the display, then it may be an overheating or failing GPU. Check the air vents on the unit and make sure that there is no blockage if the latter is the case.

Hope this Helps.

Acer Laptop Screen Flickers & Jumps

Hello,

Please connect the laptop to an external monitor. If no flickering on monitor screen, from my previous experience, this is more likely loose connection of video cable connected to the LCD. So talk to Acer support again and require the replacement of LCD.

Display flickers on acer travelmate 2410

so, did the new inverter fix the problem? and, when you were replacing the inverter, did you get to peek at the screen? ok ok, I'll make it easier than that. take your model number and search for "Acer 2410 LCD" on eBay, there are a lot of screens and none of them show a video cable that is glued or soldered to the screen. there are, in fact, a few video cables there as well, so my guess is that they are flat out lying to because 1) to get you to pay too much for repairs 2) because the person at tech support has no idea 3) they are sold together according to their parts list or 4) they really DO go together. My guess is that what they are talking about is a completely new LCD panel INSIDE a lid case with the hinges and bezel and all that. So SURE it's going to look like the cable is included, but if you just pop the back off the lid, it's probably about 10 minutes of work to replace the LCD without replacing the cable. I have to provide 2 caveats to this:

1) Acer is NOTORIOUS for glue. they love the stuff and may well have glued everything together inside the screen case.

2) I have no real experience with this specific model so I'm not sure.

It's just that every other screen ever is pretty much made of the same parts: an LCD screen with a backlight cable and a video input socket, an inverter if it's in the screen, mic, video camera, light, etc if they are in the screen, frame, back of case, and a video cable that goes from the video socket out to the mobo.

IS the display light flickering or the display image? that's important too. Good luck. it's my guess that it's either a bad connection a bad CCFL or was a bad inverter. the cables may have gotten pinched and that could be it too.

Acer 3000 Screen not working properly

This is most likely either a.) the connection to the LCD is falling out or b.) the screen itself is going bad.

If you feel comfortable to tackle this job you can buy the LCD to replace:

New LCD Screen:
http://www.lcds4less.com/AcerLaptop__acer_aspire_3000_series__laptop-screens.html

Removal Instructions:
http://www.lcds4less.com/PDF/Laptop-LCD-Removal-Instructions.pdf

Be sure to double check with the company to make sure that this screen will work with your notebook.

If you computer is still under warranty or maybe you purchased an extended warranty the manufacturer might cover replacement of the LCD.

hope that helps!

Compaq presario v2000 monitor is having horizontal purple lines that flicker.

Try reloading the drivers, delete the device in device manager and reboot. It should then pick up the drivers and reload them, if that does not work I would suspect the screen is on its way out (flickering normally means the screen or its connection is bad)
