After if you experience the same,in order to troubleshoot please follow the steps to check the hardware functionality of the scanner:

1. Disconnect the USB, TMA, ADF, and power cables from the back of the scanner. Leave the power module connected to the power source.

2. Press and hold the Copy and E-mail buttons on the front panel, and connect the power cable to the scanner. When the scanner LCD changes to flashing double zeros (00), release both of the buttons.

Acceptable media for use in the ADF
The ADF works best when the originals meet the following specifications. If the originals do not meet these criteria, scan from the scanner glass.
Avoid putting multipart forms, transparencies, magazine pages, gum-backed pages, and lightweight paper in the ADF.

    Simplex scanning (single-sided original)

    • Custom-size media ranging from 88.9 x 127 mm (3.5 x 5 inches) to 216 x 356 mm (8.5 x 14 inches).

    • Media weights from 60 to 90 grams per square meter (g/m2) (16 to 24 lbs).

    • Media that does not contain perforations or punch holes.

    • Media that does not contain wet glue, correction fluid, or ink.

    Duplex scanning (double-sided original)

    • Custom-sided media ranging from 127 x 127 mm (5 x 5 inches) to 210 x 304.8 mm (8.5 x 12 inches). To scan both sides of a legal-size document, 216 x 356 mm (8.5 x 14 inches), scan one side in the ADF, turn the document over, and then scan the other side in the ADF.

    • Media weights from 60 to 90 grams per square meter (g/m2) (16 to 24 lbs).

    • Media that does not contain perforations or punch holes.

    • Media that does not contain wet glue, correction fluid, or ink

Check whether the document falls under these category, If not please try changing the document and please leave me good rating for this solution.

Else leave me comment, we would solve your issue..

Sounds like feed rolls going bad..

The feed rolls control the paper and pull it incorrectly as well as straight. If they are worn it will cause mutiple pages to be pulled in or none at all. The sensor counts pages and if none pass the sensor within so many milliseconds it shuts the machine down assuming a jam. Also try cleaning the sensors for paper dust (is also a common problem). The rollors can be somewhat renew with rubber restorer or belt dressing (any office store should have it)... These machines need to be cleaned regurlarly as they are really sensitive to paper dust. A good can of air would help tremendously and regular cleanng of the sensors/glass insure optimum performance. Worst case is the gears are stripping/stripped casing intermittent jams and will need a new docu feeder kit for replacement (not cheap)

Straight thin line prints on copies from feeder

Hi,
When the paper is fed through Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) it is scanned before copy or fax. The scanner is fixed type and is located just below the ADF.
The lines are due to dirty scanner mirror. The printer/ scanner design is based Sheet-Fed Scanner. Open/Lift the Control Panel (scanner top )(by pulling it up from front - the area from where the paper to scan comes out). Look out for the horizontal mirror and use a soft, damp, lint-free cloth to gently clean the scanner mirror, rollers etc. and enjoy clear scanning and copying! For example see the below picture: -

Inspect for any tron pieces of paper dirt etc.DONT USE PAPER, CHEMICALS OR ANY ABRASIVE CLOTH as it may damage the parts.

Need user manual and software for a HP ScanJet 4p scanner

HI...................

HP ScanJet 4p Scanners - How to Use the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) gtabseps.gif
gtabblt.gif Tips for Using gtabblt.gif Step 1 - Load the Paper gtabblt.gif Step 2 - Scan the Document gtabblt.gif To Scan a Single Page gtabseps.gif Tips for Using
  • Remove any paper from the copyboard glass before using the ADF.
  • Straighten any curls or wrinkles from documents before putting them on the document tray. If this is not possible, do not scan these documents using the ADF. Instead, use the copyboard glass or make a photocopy of the documents and scan the photocopies.
  • Remove staples, paper clips, and any other materials from documents.
  • Avoid documents with tears, perforations, or punch holes.
  • Do not use the ADF to scan sheets of uncommon paper or other media, such as the following: - transparencies - gummed-backed paper - magazine pages - lightweight ("onionskin") carbons
  • For paper smaller than 5 inches (127 mm) by 7 inches (178 mm) or larger than 14 inches (356 mm) by 8.5 inches (216 mm), use the scanner glass instead of the ADF. Paper smaller than the minimum size may cause a paper jam.
  • For paper lighter than 16 lb bond (60 g/m sq) or heavier than 32 lb bond (120 g/m sq), use the scanner glass instead of the ADF.
  • Before scanning, always push the front of the ADF downward to the scanner to ensure that the magnetic latches are engaged.
Step 1 - Load the Paper Besides the instructions below, quick reference decals on the input tray and access hatch show the order of steps for paper loading.
  1. Turn on the scanner.
  2. Ensure the scanner's scanner glass is free of paper.
  3. Turn the green paper load lever into an upright and open position. Refer to decal number 1 located on the ADF access hatch.
  4. Put the top end of the paper stack face up on the input tray. Refer to decal number 2 and pointer arrows on the ADF input tray.
  5. Push the paper stack up against the green document guide and slide it right against the green registration stop, which is in the middle of the paper load window.
  6. Turn the green paper load lever 45 degrees into the closed position. This will secure the paper stack. Refer to decal number 3 on the ADF access hatch. The ADF is now loaded and ready for scanning.
Step 2 - Scan the Document The ADF works with many software packages that are compatible with the HP ScanJet color scanners. To scan a document, refer to the user's manual of the software package being used. To Scan a Single Page To scan a single page while the ADF is installed on the scanner, do the following.
  1. Remove any pages from the ADF input tray.
  2. Raise the ADF.
  3. Place the page on the scanner's copyboard glass.
  4. Lower the ADF all the way and do the scan.

Two black lines down the side of the paper when fed from the top feeder.

Most likely dirt on the glass for the ADF scanner, but try making a copy from the glass first by lifting the lid and placing the document directly on the scanner. If that is clear, then it is definitely dirt on ADF glass. The ADF glass is the smaller piece of glass you see when you lift the lid. Use window cleaner and a soft cloth to make sure that you have all traces of dirt, liquid paper, post it note glue. Look at the glass from very carefully because even the slightest bit of goop can cause scan defects.

Check if the paper size selected is same as that of the paper fed in. Clean the sensor in the ADF and remove if any scrap of paper is stuck.

ADF paper jam, when there is none

If you are receiving an Error Code 103 or a Paper Jam error, but there are no pages in the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), follow the steps below:
  1. Close the scanning application (such as PaperPort)
  2. Turn off the scanner and the computer
  3. If you have a combination ADF with a Flatbed scanner, unplug the ADF cable from the base of the scanner
  4. Plug the ADF cable back in
  5. Turn on the scanner power
  6. Turn on the computer
  7. Try scanning again
For a Paper Jam or Error Code 103, make sure that the ADF cable in the rear is connected to the scanner base. Check the flatbed to make sure that it is clear. A page incorrectly placed on the flatbed may interfere with a page feeding through the ADF.

If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), a warning dialog box appears after a few moments.

To clear a paper jam:
  1. Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
  2. Remove the jammed paper and close the cover.
If you are receiving a paper jam error, or if the scanner is running continuously, check to make sure the paper sensor arm is not stuck down.
  1. Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
  2. Look for the small black plastic arm
  3. When you press on this arm, it should move freely up and down
  4. If the arm is stuck down, please contact Technical Support for troubleshooting options
  5. Close the ADF cover.

HP Office Jet 7310

chances are the feeder isnt feeding the paper at all, thats why you cant scan a single paper, try opening up the ADF and clean the feed rollers first, turn off the machine and gently rub the rollers again and again until you have a clean shot or surface, try this from thop to bottom rollers, please make sure though to insert uncreased paper and paper without eardogs on its leading edge, this could cause some delay upon feeding process

sometimes because it is exposed to dust, there is a tendency for the rolllers to slip, or you could be having a broken part that drives the feed rollers from your ADF.
