SOURCE: black and decker grasshog trimmer line feed problem

As for respooling I said to heck with it and bought a new pre-lined spool at lowes for around 8 bucks. simply remove any remaining line, pop the old spool out and put the new one in.
As to the feeding issue I had the same thing going initially when i installed such spool. I didnt really get a chance to look at the problem in detail but here is what i think the problem is. The little rocker arm that engages the auto feel seems to me to have way to much play in it. I noticed if i constantly engaged and released the trigger, essentially revving it, thats when it would start eating line like crazy. I think doing this is allowing that arm to engage and feed line because of the constant shifts in rpm. It kinda seems like it allows the arm to slip in place. I also noticed that If I engaged the trimmer, and held the trigger at the same steady pace, then slowly let off that it wouldnt eat up my line. Im not to sure about all of this though. Its my grandmas and today was my first and prolly last day using it.

When I had this problem I replaced that ratchet toggle part that the string drum sits over. Do you use replacement refills or do you refill them yourself. If you wind the string in the wrong direction it all affect the auto feed.

Line doesn,t feed automaticly

Hi there,

The line may be on backwards or has developed a knot. Debris may have worked its way inside the bump head preventing it from functioning.

Check out these items.

Best regards

I properly replaced the line spool but it won't feed automatically.

After you replaced your string in the trimmer and fed it through the hole in the plastic casing in which the spool fits into, did you pull the string until you hear a click? The click locks the string in, then you can bump and feed as usual. Otherwise it won't feed normally.

My Balck&Decker Grasshog won't automatically feed line.

Just replace the LEVER, Item #29, Part #598435-00, for about $3.00 (B&D, Dewalt). Just pull old level straight out (pliers) and push replacement in. Level end expands to hold it in place. No other parts. Forget cleaning and replacement the spool, graphite or oiling... just replace the lever.

Auto feed spool doesn't work

You may need to purchase a new spool housing, which may not be too hard to do, if you have one of the name brand trimmers. This replaces the whole mechanism that holds the line, the retaining ring, etc.
