Fax fixable? error msg

Brother 2820 FAX - cleared a paper jam at the back of the unit and now the LCD display scrolls error message: "Back Cover Open. Close the Back Cover." Problem: closing the back cover does not clear the message. The User's Guide indicates that while clearing a paper jam at the rear of the unit (Page 11-9), one must "pull the tab toward you to open the rear chute cover", and I SAW the guy clear the jam: he just grabbed the paper and pulled. What did he break and can I fix it without major surgery. Naturally, this office comes to a halt without the ONE fax machine.

I fixed my own problem with alot of persistence:
step 1. Removed back cover - gently bent guide away from guide post and rear cover
releases from its pegs (left first, then right side) since pegs are not round and
the circular-looking peg holders have strategically placed slots - the back cover
just comes off in 4 seconds if you know the trick.
step 2. Removed the rear chute cover - gently bent the plastic retainer (on the right
side of the retainer cover as you look into the back of the machine), and the
retainer cover flaps down. Then (as with the rear cover above), find the exact
perfect angle to release the circular-looking peg holders with slots from the
relatively square pegs holding the rear chute cover.
step 3. The little plastic rod which has a tab touching the fuser unit and a plastic
ELL-shaped part (apparently activating the "rear door open/closed" sensor)
was shifted by the guy removing the jammed page just a little (about 0.5 cm)
toward the middle of the machine.  This shift was not enough to easily
identify as a problem - to the untrained eye (mine), but was enough to
disable the FAX, by making it think that its rear door was open.
step 4. SOLUTION: since the (obviously fragile) plastic part was unbroken, I shifted it
back toward the right side (as you look into the back of the machine).
To guide me in how far to shift this little plastic guide/sensor activator, I used
                       (2) clues: (a) in the middle, shifting the part caused the end of the
attached spring to fall into a rectangular catch (b) a little wear spot toward
the other end of the plastic part.
I shifted it back by hand, using no tools (my preference when
                       dealing with plastic parts).

We call the moose method of clearing paper jams, the RCMP method, cuz they only know how to shoot to kill. You did good. Except, there is no such thing as "Bending" anything. The term is "re-form."

Its always saying that BACK COVER IS OPEN we already check it for many times but its intact and in correct possition. and also the paper wont feed the machine.

Hi there!!
The message that you're getting means that either the back cover is not closed securely or there's a jammed paper inside. Here's what you can do to clear the message:
-Please unplug the fax machine for your safety -Open the front cover -Remove the toner & drum assembly (theres a handle in the center of the drum/toner assembly, just pull it towards you. -Remove any pieces of paper stuck or the jammed paper -Remove the toner from the drum and check for any other pieces of paper stuck -Once everything is clear -Reinstall the toner back into the drum and the drum & toner assembly to the fax machine. You should hear it click into place once installed correctly -Close the front cover & plug in the power cord. That should clear the message
Hope this helps, Thumbs up if it does, thanks!

Back cover open message although cover is closed

Open the top and back covers. If you see any jammed paper or
other item, gently pull it out, then close the covers. If the error message
remains, open and close the covers again. If the FAX/MFC cannot reset
itself and return to the date and time prompt, it will display MACHINE
ERROR XX. Please call Brother Customer Service

Jammed paper

There are 3 places to check for jammed paper.

Turn off the fax machine, then remove the tray and open the back cover, and open the front cover to remove the drum and toner (cartridge) and look inside machine.

After you find the jammed paper put the cartridge and tray back in machine and close all the covers.

Error message should go away.

Error message says unable to print on Brother 2820. It will not answer an incoming call but will transmit a fax. Machine is in almost new condition, barely used.

when you send a fax do you get transmission report? open back to see if there might be a jam, remove cassette to see if there is a jam. if these areas are clear of paper then you have a mechanical problem and it would have to be seen by a tech

This message comes up sometimes when paper is jammed inside. Remove paper thru back cover.

Brother fax 2820

Out of the lower paper tray when you go to print? Try this, remove the cassette tray and use a water dampened cloth and clean the gray paper pickup roller off. A lot of times this has paper fiber build up that causes the paper not to feed. The printer has a certain timing pattern for when paper should reach a certain sensor, and if it doesn't, then a jam error will occur.
