Some printers need special software (that shipped with the printer) to "tell" the printer that the ink-cartridge has been replaced, and that the ink-levels need to be fully "reset".
Remove the ink cartridges and clean the sensor below them.
Possibly ink on the blocking the sensor from reading the poper ink level.
After that put the cartridges back in and then go to printers on your PC and right-click the printer on the screen and try to locate a cleaning process or if you have software installed for the printer, run it through there.
Do it a few times if need be and then check the ink level.
Head cleaning it's normally called.
If it doesn't work, then the printer might simply need replacing.
You have to look online for the canon tool to reset the ink counters. When you refill these cartridges you have to run this program in order to re-use the cartridges.
I don't have the solution asked for, but there is a manual solution. When the light on the colour button flashes to indicate low ink levels, open the top of the printer and press the colour button just once. The printer will then move whichever cartridge needs replacing to a marker that looks like a water droplet with a diagonal line through it. The marker is very near the colour button, being down from it and slightly to the left.
ITS NOT THE BLACK CARTRIDGE!!! Try changing the colour cartridge and see what happens. When a 9600 checks ink levels it does the black ink first, then the colour, if the colour is low it goes back and checks the black again but will constantly give an error message for the black cartridge. Sounds bizarre but try just the black cartridge in with no colour. print a test page in black only, if that does not print then it is a fault. Also make sure the driver is updated!!!
Make sure the tape covering the hole on the bottom of the black cartridge is removed. and then go into the printers folder and right click on your printer icon and go into the properties of that printer and there should be something in there to tell it that you changed cartridges and you can also print a test page as well.
I think you are using 40/41 or 830/831 cartridge sets. Ink cartridge 41 are now a days found defective, even if it has original company mark. Tell your vendor to replace it with genuine one. Neglect the message "ink volume low". Try to print in gray scale mode avoid colour printing. At least you will be able to get your documents printed.
I think you printer cartridge as sensor which ink levels as it is failed in the black cartridge ,you can either clean the contacts the printer and cart with dry tissue paper and replace and set printer installing new cart or use it like this because the printer company doe not support refilled cartridges to be used .
