Question about EnGenius EUB-362 EXT WIRELESS USB 2.0 ADAPTER LONG-RANGE 200MW OUTPUT POWER 802.11B/G 54MBPS DETACHA... (EUB362EXT)

1 Answer

Please have patience with an elderly computer illiterate person. Am near a wifi tower and am interested in purchasing a eub362ext wireless usb adapter to get on line. My desk top has windows XP. Will this device get a signal by just plugging in the usb cable or does some type of card need to be installed as well. Thanks for any advice.

Hi spring chicken.
Two ways of going about this, cost about the same, £15 - £20. Your computer needs to talk to wireless tower, this is done by a plug in USB wireless dongle, (small stick, plugs in computer USB port) or by a wireless PCI card that fits inside your desktop in a PCI slot,(white slots on your motherboard,3or 4 of them side by side) Both ways are straight forward plug & play. You say you are near a wifi tower, this is fine as long as you are in what we call a wifi hotspot, where the owner of the tower allows unrestricted access to other users, Library's & the such allow this service. Your dongle or card will let you see if the networks are security encripted (WEP) or open unsecured. A secured network requires a network key to be used, (an 8 or 20 digit number set by the owner)
You can only get free network access in a hotspot.
Or ask the owner of a nearby network if they would be kind enough to allow to use their network, you will need a security code from them.
Hope this helps, do have a nice day.

Hi,
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

You can use either external wifi modem and connect it to the notebook by ethernet cable or (better) use PCMCIA wifi card (second-hand e.g. from eBay?) or wifi usb modem connected direct to usb port. Just check if choosen wifi modem supports your OS WIN XP (and service pack - e.g. WIN XP SP3). In the Reference guide of the notebook is not specified USB version - it seems to be v. 1.0, so it is necessary to get an USB wifi modem compatible with USB 1.0 standard.

I have a dell dimension 3100 desktop, and just purchased a fivespot mobile broadband wireless device. Can I get a wifi connection (without connecting the device directly to my tower?

No, your desktop doesn't have a wifi card. You will have to either buy one and install it or connect the Verizon dongle directly with an USB cable.

My netbook does not take cd's, how can i start up 362?

The netbook we got was our 6th computer. Please don't comment that this is your only machine :-)

There are about 3 or 4 ways to get the information.
1. Buy an external CD/DVD unit
2. Share your CD rom on the network and use network neighborhood to find the drivers
3. Transfer the data to a USB memory stick
4. Do any combination of the above like borrow whatever you need, be it CD rom, Memory Stick, or a friend with a desktop computer.

Good luck.

If your laptop does not have a wireless card built into the computer then yes I would go and buy a usb wifi adapter because you cant get wifi if you dont get one.

My wireless has gone capoot.

Most desktop computers are not by default wifi capable (barring a few models that include an internal USB wifi adapter in the case.) If you have added wifi to the unit by installing an internal PCI-Card Wifi adapter or plugged in a USB Wifi adapter into one of your USB ports then that capability will be added. As far as a Keyboard command to activate the Wifi, that is usually dependent on the Computer and/or the brand and model of the adapter installed. What brand of Computer and model are you having problems with? If the Wifi was added after it was purchased, what brand and model of adapter are you using?

The DS wifi is a little different. You need to buy the WiFi DISC, the only wireless that is "free" persay is the "person to person" wireless.

Hm. I had exactly the same problem with an elderly HP. Can't remember what I did to fix it. Could be your Dell is elderly, and only has USB1 capability, not USB2. You can see all hardware and software on your computer with serial nos etc. with a free program called Belarc Advisor--that will tell you whether you have USB 2 capability. If that's the problem, you can purchase a USB 2 card and install it if you have a desktop. Anyway, Dell help is very good--give them a call, and they should sort it out for you.
