Question about Canon Pixma MP500 All-In-One InkJet Printer
For error 5100 try the following, I know it works on some Canon printers:
Unplug printer, press and hold "resume" button, press "power" button and hold down, release "resume", press "resume", release and press again. Release both buttons and now press "resume" 4 times. Power off. Re-start.
Hope this helps.

I had an error code 5100 and a loud grinding sound immediately after clearing a paper jam. This is what I did:
Turned the printer off to reset the error code. Then I put one sheet of paper in the loader and tried to make a copy. When it started bunching up again, I immediately pushed the stop/reset button. This causes it to send the paper right through. After I did this twice, on the third time it made my copy no problems. If you look online at www.usa.canon.com/home, your can find your product, then select the support and services tab and search for your problem. When I searched for error code 5100, it gave me 4 different things to try. (One of those things was to reseat the printer cartridges, which may be the problem if your printer fell off the table!)

I took my unit completely apart... and found that paper had rolled in between the print head and the shaft on which the head moves, so i couldnt see it. the grinding noise was due to the motor not being able to overcome the little bit of paper that was about 1cm x 1cm. if u are the hands-on type, its quite easy to disassemble the mp500 and fix. just be careful not to pull any wires loose, and take note of how everything was before disassembling each piece. the only "wire" i had to take out was the one anchoring the scanner to the main print body, which is located on the left side when u are facing the front of the printer, and in my case it was black and held onto the print body by a screw.
