You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive ans in FAT32.
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that its Healthy.

SOURCE: no external hardrive recognition

It could be that the drive is not formatted/Initialized as yet! Right click on "My Computer" the click on "Manage". Go to(click on) "Disk Management". If the initialize disk wizard comes up automatically then just follow the wizard cause that means your disk needs to be initialized. On the right pane you should see all the disks and their status. It could be that your disk is un allocated. Look for the disk that is full black(black means unallocated), right click on the disk and click on "Create Partition" Follow the steps of the Create Partition Wizard( It will give you the option to format, DO THAT! If when you right on the disk and all that shows is "Initialize", then do that! and go back and create the partition! Hopefully that should do the trick!

Is this a new external with no data on it? If it is, it may need to be formatted.Go to disk management to see if the drive is there. It may need to be initialize first before you can formatted. If it has not been initialized, a message will pop up for you to initialized it. Once it is done, formatted--This should be done only if don't have any data on it.

SOURCE: when i connect 500GB External USB hard disk on

Hardware wizards simplify the process of obtaining the correct device driver for a particular device. It can be especially important if a new device is attached to the computer and no device driver is available locally. you can go to device manager to check the hardware that you have connected & search for proper driver to install. you can search through windows update to update driver for your external hard disk.

To Control Windows Update Device Driver Searching and Prompts by Using Control Panel

  1. Click Start, and then either click Control Panel, or point to Settings and then click Control Panel.

  2. Either double-click System, or click System and Maintenance and then click System.

  3. Click Advanced system settings and then click the Hardware tab.

  4. Click Windows Update Driver Settings.

  5. Choose an option:

    • Check for drivers automatically

    • Ask me each time I connect a new device before checking for drivers

    • Never check for drivers when I connect a device
You cannot disable Device Manager, but you can use Control Panel to prevent hardware wizards from searching for drivers on the Windows Update Web site. Alternatively, you can turn off all access to Windows Update.

Computer won't recognize external usb hard drive

try it on another computer if that dosent work you should
reformat your computer but first backup all your data by putting your another internal hardrive on your computer and move all your files you need to the empty hardrive and after that take the hardrive with all your stuff in it off the computer and then reformat the hardrive which the external hardrive does not work on and install a new operating system then put the other hardrive with all your stuff back on your computer and transfer your stuff into the hardrive with a operating system then try the external hardrive

OR
you can burn all your stuff into a CD or a DVD
OR
you can put all your stuff into FlashDrives and then after you reformat the hardrive with an operating system put your stuff back into the computer and after that the external hardrive should work

Hi,
You can transfer the data files only from the old laptop to the new one. You cannot transfer the installed applications/software. Software are required to installed again on the new laptop afresh.
To transfer the data you can use external portable hard disk, which can be connected to the PC using any USB port (just like pen drive) and you can copy - paste the required data to the external disk just like you copy data from one partition to another. After copying the required data, you can connect the external drive to new laptop and copy the data to the new laptop. You can use external drive of any brand/ capacity. However, it is better to have an external drive with larger capacity, so that you can transfer the data in one go.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Hi My Maxtor External Hardrive is connected to my laptop the green light is on but its not recognised by the laptop.

Welcome to fixya,

The main caused of the problem is the enclosure of your Maxtor ext drive you need to change ot replace it to a new one. Take your hadridsk out of the enclosure and buy new enclosure and then put your hardisk back on to the new enclosure.

Black screen battery charged new ac cord turns on fan is on nothing on screen wont go on to hard disk i guess

Your LCD screen is probably bad.. Can you see anything? It may be very very very dim. If it is very dim(use a flashlite to see if anything comes up), if you can see something but is very very dim then it is the backlight to your LCD screen and you need a new screen

Try connecting your PC to an external monitor.. then try getting it to work..

If it works on an external monitor then it is your LCD screen.
If it fails, then it is your video card or motherboard.
