It really doesn't make much difference if you are using the Thumb drive on a USB 1.0 or 2.0, It could be possible that there is some issue with the Driver itself. Try to connect the drive to another USB port. Check if it happens with the Drive on other computer also. If it works fine on other computer Try to format it and then check on this system.

Hope this resolves your issue, Please let me know

I found some pretty cool documents here. You're right it says 2.0. but still, a lot of good info. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents just put in your model and hit search. On the top left is a link for drivers & software.
click on show all files. Make sure your drivers are up to date but especially the ones for the memory stick and the mouse. And use you windows updates faithfully! So many new bad bugs out there, you need them up to date. You should already have sp3. Not a good idea to cut corners in that area. Not having them could make all kinds of things go wrong. Last but not least you might try powering on with your device attached. If I helped pleased rate me..Thanks and good luck.

SOURCE: USB device not recognized

This solution worked for me when I got the USB device not recognized message:
http://www.infobarrel.com/USB_Port_Repair
It can be quite frustrating. I've heard that older computers are more likely to have the USB device not recognized message.

USB flash drive un recognized -transcend JF v30/8GB. i have tried a couple of computers (VISTA/XP-sp2) same problem yet previosuly was working. can i recover the drive + data?

Have you tried to manually install the device? Do you see any changes on the screen when you insert the USB device? Do you see any lights on the Flash Device when it is inserted into the computer?

I need the driver for wd2500me-00,usb external hard disk

The folks over at WD said:

There are no downloadable USB, Firewire, or eSATA drivers available. WD external drives install using the resident USB and Firewire drivers that come in Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Vista, and Mac 10.4 and 10.5. If the drivers are not installing when you connect the WD drive, or you are having driver issues, you will need to contact Microsoft or Apple for their recommendations.

I will search further if you like, just let me know.
Try the old, disconnect (the drive form the computer), reboot, reconnect, reboot once again and see if it picks up the way it was meant to.
Hope this has been of help please leave rating
thank you.

Windows os

Its true. the Bios or HDD driver wont allow you to install Win XP on it.. This BIOS is compatible with only Win Vista. The only easy way to do it is by creating 2 partitions while installing vista. once vista is installed- install XP with Dual boot and than format the vista partition.

Reinstalled xp after Vista . USB port not working

Hi there,

The usb drivers are part of your chipset drivers, so lets try and get this sorted. The reason that they work in Vista, is probably because Vista has added support for your chipset and XP SP2 doesn't.

Try installing XP from scratch. First you need to completely wipe your hard drive. Use the XP boot disc, you need to delete the hard drive partition as well. This way, you will start with a RAW drive.

Set up a new partition, and let the XP disc format the drive with NTFS. Do NOT use quick format. Then let XP copy the files and install.

When XP has installed, get your internet set up, and download XP Service Pack 3 from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=en

You will notice that Microsoft have written not to use if updating just one machine. Ignore this. The reason is because this is the FULL Service Pack, hence it being over 300MB.

Once you have SP3 installed, your system will restart. Open Windows Update, make sure you have this set to update all Microsoft products, then download all updates. Restart your system and check if your usb's are working.

If they are still not working, go to the laptop website and download the chipset drivers from there, but make sure you are downloading the drivers for XP. If not, then go to the Chipset manufacturer's website and download from there.

Let me know how you get on

"USB Device Not Recognized" - any usb device

1-Make sure you are using XP SP2. You probably are but just in case....

2-Unplug all USB devices

3-Uninstall any software for the devices you just unplugged

4-Reboot into safe mode and open the device manager. Make sure to choose the show hidden devices option

Note: Follow the order of removal exactly and this MUST be done in safe mode only!

5-Remove any entries for USB peripherals like scanners and printers

6-Remove any entries for HID devices or Combp USB devices

7-Remove all USB root hub entries

8-Remove all USB host controller entries

9-Reboot to normal mode, let Windows reset the USB stack and try your thumb drive.

If this didn't work then repeat steps 1-8.
Staying in safe mode, right click in the device manager and scan for hardware changes. Let Windows reset the USB stack and try your thumb drive again.

Also when doing any of this try and get a hold of another thumb drive and try it instead of yours. Your thumb drive could be the source of the trouble. We had similar issues we tracked down to a bad batch of Memorex thumb drives.

Driver Issues on Windows Vista Basic

As an adhoc solution you may try to download drivers for XP SP2, tell the driver installation applet to search for drivers from the folder you downloaded them to when it tells you this driver was not made for Vista tell it to install them anyway. It may not work but as this manufacturer is no longer in the modem biz vista is not supported by them at this time.
