Hi,

Follow the below troubleshooting guide ;-

Remember the big three's that a engine must have to start:

  • Must be getting fuel (dirty or clogged fuel filters).
  • Must be getting air into the carb (air filters).
  • Must be getting spark (check for good spark).
Engine Won't Start:
  • Check fuel for level and cleanness. Has it been left out side? Possibly water in the gas tank.
  • Is the engine primed and choked properly?
  • Are all safety switches locked in place (brake pedal depressed)?
Engine Will Not Crank:
  • Are safety switches locked in place (brake pedal depressed)?
  • Safety control arm depressed?
  • If installed with oil level shutoff, Is oil level at proper level?
  • Is battery charged if available on your model?
  • Obstructions under deck that blocks blade from turning (never put your hands near blades)?
  • Check for spark.
  • Do you have fuel shut off on?
Engine Smokes:
  • Check to see if oil level to high?
  • Possible signs of worn internal parts (contact an authorized service dealer).
Mower Vibrates Excessively:
  • Check for bent or damaged blades (never put hands near blades).
  • Broken engine mounts or welds.
  • Broken or loose blade hubs (never put hands near blades).
  • Bent crankshaft (this can be a possible cause specially if it happens after you have hit something).

Try just the wire itself. make sure there is a bare spot on the block and see if there is a spark... if so it is possible that the spark plug is defective (it does happen)

New spark plug, cleaned air filter, won't start, used starting fluid, how do I check spark?

unscrew spark plug . plug cap back on and hold it against engine and pull cord. plug should give healthy blue spark. if orange the little elbow contact on bottom of plug should be adjusted by tapping it lightly to close the gap between electrodes. do not hold plug by its body when pulling starter rope or ignition. if u can smell petrol on plug then ur engine is flooded.

I installed new carb. on my tecumseh 5hp. snow king and it wont start. I have spark and gas is flowing out of carb.

This can be very frustrating and tough on the back and arm.
Always confirm the the fuel tank valve is open and the stop/run switch is in run position

It takes three things to run:
  1. Compression. This is the resistance that you feel as you crank the engine. Some engines have compression release to assist getting the rotation started. You should be able to feel the compression stroke as you rotate, Remove the plug and you can easily tell the deference. If it had, last time used, been running and starting with no problem I would assume that the compression is OK. Gauges are available to check. at lease 120 PSI
  2. Spark. It is near impossible to lose the spark timing on these. It can only be magnitude and presence. If in doubt about the condition of spark plug replace. I usually lay the plug on top of the head with wire attached and observe for the spark. No spark no start.
  3. Confirm that the throttle is in the wide open position. It is possible during the repair the spring or rod has closed the throttle air valve. Air/fuel mixture is always hard to trouble shoot. I use open choke and starter fluid to conform that compression and spark are working. After that I will choke on a cold motor and pull listening for the first fire. At the first fire I would usually half choke and pull to first run. Full choke for many pulls will only flood engine!! If no joy then I would allow engine to vent and go back to start fluid. If it will run on start fluid than either carburetor is messed up or quality of fuel is bad.
If after several tries and fuel is certain to be good remove plug and check for gas. It is possible that the new carb float valve or mixture adjustment screws are messed up.

My echo leaf blower will not start. How do I check to see if it is getting spark

Pull the plug out, connect it to the wire and lay the plug against the metal engine. Pull the starter cord and watch for spark at the plug.

Truns over but want crank

An engine spinning just means your battery is good and starter works. You'll need to find out if you're getting the other things you need. Those being air, fuel, and spark.
For air, take the air filter out of the picture by removing the air flow going to the carb. Try to start the car.
if it doesn't start, for Fuel, try spraying into the carb some starting fluid then try starting the car. Does it run for a little bit with the starting fluid you just sprayed in there? If so, you've probably got a fuel problem.
If the engine still won't start, take one spark plug out and keep the spark plug wire attached to it. Make sure the spark plug is touching metal so it's grouned electrically, like laying against the engine block. Don't hold the spark plug because you can get a good shock if you hold it wrong. Just lay it on the engine block. Ttry starting the engine and watch for spark at the end of the spark plug. Sometimes the spark is hard to see so doing this at night or in a garage will make it easier to see the spark which leads me to another point. Sometimes your sparkplug wires get so old they electrically aren't any good anymore. You'll be able to know that if you start your car at night and you look under the hood and see little sparks jumping from your spark plug wires to ground. This means your spark plug wires need replacing and that could be your problem. Usually the engine will run when this happens but it won't run very good as most of the spark is being shorted out.
So try to isolate where the problem is...Air, Fuel, or Spark and go from there.

I HAVE NO SPARK ON MY BRIGGS AND STRATON MOTOR

Try this locate your coil / magneto and disconnect the kill "shut off wire " and try to start if it starts your switch may be bad or wire broken..if still no spark using a rubber handled pliers ...Pull your plug wire and place a screwdriver or similar metal piece and in the plug wire now bring the screw driver close to the engine block or Frame if spark it is your plug..if not your coil needs replaced...not a hard job just use a business card to set clearance on your coil..good luck

My car turns over but it wont start

you are lacking either fuel or spark. nothing in your description gives a clue. pull a spark plug out and lay it business end near to the engine block with the wire still attached while someone cranks it over. if you see a spark jumping from the plug to the block, then you have spark. if the plug is dry, then you don't have fuel. if the plug is wet, then you have fuel. it is going on 20 and anything may be bad.

I press the button to start it and it wont start....the battery is good and all the fuses are good

You don't say what does happen when you press the start button. If it just clicks, then the starter relay/solenoid is bad or dirty. If there is no noise at all, then the starter button may not be making contact, or power is not getting to the button, check those wires. I have a Honda that sometimes get bugs behind the button and it doesn't make contact. If the engine is turning over but not starting, then you need to check for spark and gas getting to the cylinders. Take out a spark plug, or take a spare one, insert it into the spark plug wire end, and lay it against the engine block as you press the starter. If you see a spark in the base of the plug, then that is okay. You can usually smell the fuel if it is getting to the cylinder okay, because it will flood if you keep trying to start and it doesn't, check for fuel leaks in your lines, though. If no fuel is getting there, then check your filter and fuel lines for leaks. You could also have bad fuel, it gets that way over time if not used.

Wont kick over

Try to start a few times, If it does not, remove spark plug, If plug is wet, you probably have a spark problem (or water in fuel). With the plug attached to the plug wire hold plug against the engine, pull cord or engage starter to see if you have a spark. If so you will have to get fuel to the engine.
