Negative, was turned off. I pushed the button a few minutes later to turn it back on and the compaq logo came up and then everything froze.

Sorry, did not clarify statments. Did all that before posting. Unplugged everything. Turned on again, nothing. Cannot even turn it off after trying to start and getting to Compaq logo. Monitor works fine. Shows Compaq logo. At this point I suspect it is either the CPU or mother board. any suggestions on how to find out which or any other solutions.
    Thanks

I had this problem with my SR1420NX. The problem lasted for quite awhile. Sometimes it would simply powered down abruptly and not power up for hours. I vacuumed the unit several times thinking the unit might be overheating, but it did not help. I finally used a small air compressor and blew out all the dust. Using the compressor to blow it out seems to have worked. It's been running continuously for over a month now.

Take care not to blow on the fans to the point it does them damage due to overspeed.

Try unplugging everything you can from the computer. Only leave keyboard, monitor, and power cables connected. Then try to turn on again. If computer boots now, then start adding peripherals back one at a time, rebooting each time. when you get the hang, there is your suspect peripheral.

Also, is the monitor itself having issues, or is it the computer? Look at the power light on the monitor, is it staying green, or is turning back to same color when it is in standby state?

How to get to boot chooer on tne m700 starts

Hi.

  1. Turn on the computer. When the Compaq logo displays, press F10. Or,
  2. During Power On Self Test (POST), and after the memory check completes, press F10 as soon as you see a small white square flashing on the top right corner of the screen.
  3. In the computer setup, use the right arrow to move the selection to the Advanced menu.
  4. Use the down arrow to move the selection down to Boot options, and press Enter. The Boot options menu pops up with four boot order options.
  5. Use the down arrow to move the selection.
  6. Press the left arrow to change the order of Notebook.
  7. Press F10 to accept the change.
  8. Press ESC to jump back File menu, and then move the selection down to "Save changes and exit".
  9. Press Enter. If asked to save changes and exit, press F10.
On some laptops you can change the boot order by tapping the F12 key as the computer starts up.

Regards.

Only shows compaq on screen

I work with Compaq computers now and usually your problem points to the hard drive. I know Compaq's will stay on that screen if the hard drive has failed. Try another hard drive would be my suggestion.

Hope this helps.

The Start up screen for Compaq series computers is normal, that screen takes you into your BIOS mode. when the screen appears press F1, at the bottom of the screen it will say press F5 or one of those keys to install your Default Settings, Click Yes and Exit. That should do it. Good Luck.
