K simple solution sounds stupid but make sure the cable is plugged into the right jack in the back of the tower if not your audio drivers for your motherboard might be not installed or outdated find the model number of your computer go to www.compaq.com and go under support and drivers and find the driver for your model number and windows program

I assume that model has a built in sound card?
You probably just need to fix a driver problem.
Open control panel -> admin tools -> computer management.
Expand the device manager and if you see any items with a question mark, exclamation mark or a red X on it then those devices are having problems.
If you don't have the disks that came with the PC then go to the Compaq website and have a look in their support section. You should be able to find the drivers for your exact pc.
