Freezer thaws then refreezes

I have an Amana side by side Model scd23vl. Over the passed few months I have noticed that my freezer starts to thaw and then eventually will start back up and refreeze my food this also causes my fridge side to warm and then cool. This sometimes happens everyday or every few days. When running, it works perfect. I have found sometimes if I spin the red knob at the bottom to where it clicks into a "special spot" it refrigerator starts working again. I have seen the freezer section getting to approx 45degrees then dropping to 5 what do I check?

I was going to suggest that maybe it is a self defrost issue not shutting off when it should but sine you mentioned this knob, it suggests a thermostat out of calibration - I can rule out circuit problems since you can manually turn on compressor by turning the knob to a cooler position - you will need to have it serviced and change the thermostat which is not cycling whne it's supposed to.

ALSO - do not refreeze foods in your freezer that have thawed ! Throw them away !!! Normal freezer temps should not be warmer than 10F, the normal temps are 0F, and optimal recommended temp -10F (for hard ice cream) and to allow better recovery in case of power failures.

Refrigerator section no warmer tan 40F.....optimal recommended 34F.

The thing you are turning is the timer. It's in defrost and when you turn it, your advancing it out of defrost and back into the run cycle. As far as your problem. You have a bad termination thermostat. The way it works is. When your unit goes into defrost (every 8 - 10 hrs.), the timer holds it in defrost for 20 mins. The termination thermostat cuts the defrost heaters off after the temp inside the freezer gets above a set temp. (around 31 - 38 degrees, according to the model you have). This keeps the heaters from staying on the whole 20 Min's and warming your freezer. You will find this part behind the inside bottom back panel of the freezer section. It's round, clips onto the coil and has two wires coming from it. It's easy to replace. Good luck!

Hi Jan, the problem is a bad ice maker water valve. Pull the refrigerator out and look for the plastic water line that's going to the tube that's freezing. Follow that tube to the faulty water valve. The problem is, its leaking water slowly to the ice maker and it freezes up . Easy fix : Good luck

My Amana refrigerator with bottom freezer thaws intermittently, every 5 days or so. When it thaws there is a buzzing sound from the fridge that lasts a couple of seconds and recurs every 30-60 seconds....

The techs are correct. The sound you hear is the compressor trying to start.
Most appliance parts companies sell what is called a
start kit or hard start kit. I personally use the "ic13".
It has given me the best results but it's a **** shoot.
If you feel like gambling, try it. As well,
It is very important that you run the machine with the back cover in place. It ducts the air to the condenser . Very important. Make sure the condensor coils are clean, as well.

Freezer thawing and refreezing

The freezer is supposed to thaw at least everyday. Only, you usually kant tell because it doesn't do it long enough to melt the food so you don't notice it. You have a couple of components to check here. 1 is the defrost timer, which unless it has been changed recently, has the same pre determined defrost time. So you would have noticed by now. Next is the defrost termination switch. If you have excess ice on the evaporator, this will make the defrost longer than before. Unless the switch is going bad causing the defrost to go extra long, there is an excess amount of ice that is more than usual. Bad door seal will cause this. A slightly low freon charge. And a thermostat that is malfunctioning, causing the freezer to run continuously, will make excess ice buildup in the freezer. I would make sure the kids aren't leaving the door open and the gaskets are good. If not the case, call a repairman.
