Question about Dell Latitude D600 Notebook
My husband bought a laptop from a friend a while back and we don't know the password to start it up. After I push alt+ctrl+del, there is a username in there and I don't know the password. We've tried pushing F8 but it won't let us log in to safe mode or anything else without this password. Is there any way to reset it? Any way to just reinstall Windows and skip this screen?
Assuming Windows XP.
Boot into safe mode. Do so by pressing 'F8' a few times just as the computer begins to boot up (right before the Windows screen)
Once in safe mode, click on administrator (or type it in as the username if it doesn't come up with the welcome screen). It shouldn't, by default, have a password if it is XP Home.
Once logged in as administrator, go to control panel and users and change the password on the account you want or create a new one.

it will be very difficult for you to figure out the password for 1st user. unless he tells you the actually password.
In order for anyone to get into safe mode, make sure computer is shutdown, turn on the computer and look for 1st logo, windows xp is second logo, 1st logo is a manufacture logo. start pressing f8 key.
Even though once you start up windows with safe mode it may not let you get into the OS.
Best choice would be reinstall the Operating System.
when u start your computer it should gives you option to go into Setup/BIOS. In BIOS you can put Boot from CD as 1st option then save changes. Insert the CD in the Drive and install the Operating System Fresh.
hope this information will help you. if you still have any question please let me know.

Most likely the hard drive is failing, run diagnostics on the hard drive if you have a resource CD. Or you can download them from support.dell.com
