Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

Not circulating air

Freezer not creating a good seal, but I can hear the fan moving. Refrig side fan not running and not creating a very good seal. Air does not seem to be circulating from freezer to refrig side. Nothing is blocking air passage.

Earlier in day freezer side had no seal and products were nearly thawed. Unknown reason why. I took things out and put them back in. Including ice tray to see if something was keeping door from completely closing.

You will need to have your door gasket seals inspected and possibly replaced.

Then you might want to check behind the back cover of your freezer and look for ice build up and excess frost on your evap coils - this indicates seld defrosting problems - and the symptoms are functioning compressor and evap fan but air is not cool enough - Once you manually defrost those with a dryer and let your unit cool for a few hours, if it comes back to normal you know you have a defrost problem and will need to have your control board / defrost components checked.

Also - you might want to have them check your damper system it might be shut or not opening to let the air from your freezer in your refrigerator. (if applicable)

After emptying the ice bin on 2 year old side frigidaire, the freezer is OK, but the fresh food side has stopped cooling. Any ideas?

check that the fan in the freezer is running,it circulates the cold air,if it isclose freezer door, open refrig. door lookto the upper left you will see where the cold air enters the refrig compartment and should fill air coming thruough vent this is a motorized unit and they sometimes fail, also check the return air hole located at bottomof refrig.sometimes get blocked by plastic bags etc

My GE Adora side by side refrig. has stopped making ice and I am having a hard time regulating the settings on it. The freezer is too cold and the refrig. section isn't cold enough. I also have noticed...

Defroster circuit/timer has failed.

The water line to the icemaker has probably frozen,so no ice. The cooling coils are in the freezer, and the cold air moves to the fridge via vents and circulation fan.

When it all ices up, no air gets to fridge, fridge gets warm.

Many models have a mechanical defroster timer located under the lower front kick panel. Manually rotate the timer until you hear the compressor stop.

Defroster heater then should come on and you hear scorch/hiss/gurgle of defrost sounds. If the timer is working, the fridge should come back on after about a half hour or so.

Sometimes timer fails, sometimes heater element fails. There is also a defrost thermostat that's part of the heater assembly.

My Maytag Plus side by side is cold in the freezer but not cold enough in the refrig part despite turning the refrig control to a colder setting. No air seems to be blowing out of the air circulator vent.

this is usually a problem with evaporator fan not turning when the unit is running.check the freezer compartment and listen to the fan if it running. if it is not running it needs to be replaced.one good indication is ice or frost build up on the rear of the freezer compartment

Why does the top freezer work extremely well, even freezing water on the lowest setting but the lower part only gets to 47 degrees? As the freezer is turned to high the lower part increases to 52 degrees....

Sounds like your door seal is damaged somewhere on the lower door. Take a dollar bill and stick it longways along the door seal, and close door. There should be a firm resistance pulley the paper out. Move the bill along the door seal, checking each inch.

Of course, if the bottom part of the seal has a gap, this can usually be seen visually. Why the bottom part? Because when something gets spilled in the fridge, and "Not Me" doesn't clean it up, the stickiness pulls the seal, stretching and deforming it.

Why does the temp go up when freezer is turned lower? Because the fan in the lower compartment runs when the compressor runs. The more air that is moved in the lower compartment, the more air that is moved through the bad door seal.

Refrig temp not cold enough..drinks are almost warm

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked. if the freezer has air and the rear freezer wall has frost on it, the evaporator coils are iced up and need defrosting. causes: 1. low refrigerant 2. no fan 3. too much humid air in fridge/freezer due to door open or bad door seals 4. the condensate drain tube is clogged if the seal around the door is ripped or not completely sealing, or there is condensation at the bottom or the walls of the fridge, replace the seal(s). no air, no fan. Replace if the refrigerant is low, it just needs a top off. but you need to be certified by the epa to move refrigerant, so get a professional. defrost solutions: unplug the fridge. remove the wall of the freezer that is frosted/icing up. use a hair dryer to melt the ice. do not get too close. you will see a drain under the evaporator coil. make sure it is not blocked. the water should run freely to a condensate pan under the fridge that evaporates the condensation with the hot line from the compressor. once the coil is free of ice, frost, and water, replace the panel and repair any of the problems that caused the icing up. plug the fridge in and turn it on. If it frosts up within a week, there is still an issue that not been taken care of.

Refrig side not working

sounds like the circulating fan(evaporator)is wearing out, this problem is very hard to diagnose because the fan will spin but not fast enough to circulate the chilled air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The parts and labor are around $300.00

I have a Domestic 2804 frig in my RV, The freezer works great but the frig part will not cool at all, can you help

All cooling takes place in the freezer. The refrig/fresh food side is a parasite, depending on cold air circulation from the freezer side. The fan in the freezer provides that circulation, and usually the freezer control setting determines how much air is moved into the refrig side.
If the fan is up to speed and the both controls are set in a middle position, the refrig side should be fine. if the problem continues, replace evaporator fan motor or clear the blockage preventing circulation (usually frost build-up from a defective defrost system part or blocked defrost drain).

Moved Side By side w/Dolly now Refrig side is not working

I have seen this happen so many times with all appliances.

First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer. The settings may both be numbers however, they work the same way as described above.

Now, why is that cold air not getting over to the Ref side?
1. The little door is not open.
check your control setting. You should be able to feel air coming through the channel on the Ref side.

2. The fan in the freezer is not working.
You can hear this fan running when you open the freezer.

3. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice which won't let the fan circulate the air over to the Ref side.
This is a failure of the defrost system but, this would also cause the freezer side to not get cold after 2 weeks.
