Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Here we go, I am currently dealing w/a dell dimension 2400 that was origanally purchased from a rent to own place several years ago. It was online and running very slowly. As it belonged to my mother-in-law-and had been used by everyone in the family (lots of grandkids)! The OS is XP. It was in very sad shape and the OS was in a condition like i had never seen before. Not that I'm very computer savy but it was very peculiar. It wouldnt allow me acces to security options to check and make sure the firewall was on. And the antivirus was someting that was yahoo based and had been on there for years. I was going to install Microsoftt Security Essentials and unistall whatever it was she had. It would start the download process And before i could ever reach finish the computer would completly shut down. I traced down a Wuavclt.exe error. I installed A registry cleaner ccleaner to be exact, and it cleaned up alot of stuff and the PC seemed to run a lil better. I then attempted to install Microsoft security essintials again and this time it made it all the way to the finish button and as soon as i pressed it ,it shut down on me again. Now, when I try to reboot, and windows starts to load, the "We apologize windows could not start do to a recent hard or software related issue" safe mode, safe mode w/net.,safe mode w/command prompt and start normall page appears. Can anyone begin to help me w/ this problem? I Know I should prob. just get another PC. It's just that I'm beginning to learn a lil bit and hope to one day obtain my A+ cert. I just have a long way to go and I think I may be in over my head a lil bit. Another thing, I think there may be a problem because, I'm not sure about the whole "backup process" although When the registry cleaner was being installed it asked if i would like to back up and i said yes and i have the file name if that is any help. Thank you to anyone that reads this and many thanks to anyone that may care to even attempt to help me.

I have found my installation cd and ran it and now I have reached the page that ask "To set Windows XP now hit enter" "To Repair a windows XP install. W/recovery mode" And "to quit setup" and so forth. I'm assuming I should choose Repair w/recovery console is this correct? And then all I need is admin. pass.? I hope this is correct

From what you are describing, the system has had a pretty bad malware infection. In cases like this, it is generally easier and faster to save email, data and favorites to CD or USB key and do a clean installation of Windows XP

You can try a repair reinstall, the worst case scenario is that if the Repair install is unsatisfactory, that you reinstall again clean the 2nd time.

If your current speakers are plugged in to the back of the computer, then there is no way to install additional speakers unless you purchase and install a sound card.

Removing sides on a Dell Dimension 2400 tower

Lay the case on its side and depress the "buttons", there are is one on either end. The case opens like a **** shell, if you start to open it and it feels very heavy on the top, stop and turn it over so the motherboard is toward the floor, that will make it easier on you.

I need to reinstall window xp pro on my dell dimension 2400-

If you don't need any files currently on the computer, boot from your Windows XP disc, have it delete the current partition and then format the new partition, and install windows XP.
Note: this will delete anything you currently have on the computer at this time!
