Run the PSA Diags to check if there's a problem with the hardware.
To do this turn off the computer, and while the computer is off, press and hold the <FN> key and press the power button to turn it on.
You will see on the screen that diagnostic boot selected and then you can release the keys now.
Wait for it to finish and if there's an error it will generate an error code. If it does have an error code, you need to call tech support for assistance.

When turning on the laptop it goes to the Dell screen and stops with the "loading bar" at about 75%. When I push F12 it says "preparing one time boot menu" but goes no farther to choose...

This is your BIOS ( Basic Input Output System) screen. Before the computer loads the Operating system it checks to see if all the devices are there and ready. If the laptop hangs at that point, you might have a problem with your hard drive or CD/DVD drive. Try removing the drives and see if you get past that screen. I had just purchased a Dell Inspiron N4010 laptop 2 months ago. It work well until few days ago. It hangs whilst at the screen 'starting windows'. After that it showed the message of 'check cable...

hello miss sally, hi, the operating system error may be caused by a faulty hard disk or hard disk connection cable, and the hanging thing is caused by a faulty memory module, so check then out first, swap a new memory module, and for your hard drive, take it out from your laptop and use a PC to test the drive (applicable only if your hard drive is sata.)

Have you tried to uninstall the webcam, or to restore your computer to an earlier date? Would verify that the webcam software may be a problem.

01. If the Laptop is under Warranty, you will get the technical support from the wep after typing the following website :
http://support.ap.dell.com/support/supportrequests/api/create.aspx

02. Frequent hanging may be due to Harddisk crash or latest antivirus patch not updated.

03. Please update the latest antivirus patches and run for any virus checking.

04. Over phone you will get Gold Technical support from Dell Service Support Team.

05. If Dell team is not able to solve the problem, either they will replace the Laptop or send some local Dell Authorized service engineer to give solution for the same.

06. On Daily basis, please take a backup in DVD CDs-R/W (4.7 GB Memory) after selecting the files to be backed up daily or weekly.

07. Better advise to replace the Laptop or Replace the HDD from Dell Team.

Set turn off hard disks option to NEVER in Control Panel / Power Options.
This is documented in Dell somewhere but I can't find it again.
