Question about IBM ThinkPad T42 Notebook
It could be that the laser has been damaged or is dirty, but all signs point to a laser reading malfunction. If you have a lens cleaner handy, give it a run in your CDVD drive and then try another DVD. If that does not work, then unfortunately you will need either a replacement lens or most likely a new CDVD drive. If the laptop is still under warranty, contact the warranty provider and see what they can do, if not then you may want to weigh up the cost to see if its really worth getting fixed, since generally a laptops life is 3-5 years (can be longer if looked after well)
