Smoke from the exhaust at start up means that the valve seals are leaking oil into the cylinder, smoke when you accellerate means that the piston rings are leaking oil.

My 97 civic lx is leaking oil from the exhaust. I recently had the timing belt and distributor replaced but it continues to build up an oil mist on the rear bumper. The gas mileage has dropped...

I would pull the spark plugs and see if they have oil on them. If so, I would have to say that you have BLOW-BY. In other words the piston rings on your pistons or the cylinder walls are worn. When this happens oil can blow-by the piston rings into the combustion chamber. So as the exhaust opens up the oil is flowing through it and into your exhaust. This can be a very expense repair.

Does a 97 dodge ram 1500 have an engine to firewall ground strap and if so can you describe the whereabouts?

My '97 with the 5.9L gas engine does not. It's grounded from the battery to the frame and a ground strap ran from a bolt under the exhaust manifold on the passenger side(near the oil filter) to the frame

97 f250 5.8L starts to run rough and puffs out thick black smoke. It comes and goes. Any ideas?

Exhaust problems. Black smoke=exhaust, blue smoke=oil, white smoke=water.

97 kia sephia smokes when first starts, smells like exhaust smoke

Black smoke is fuel.
Blue is oil.
White is coolant / water.

Fuel is caused by timing and cold start system and requires some discussion to clarify.

Oil burning only on start is caused by failing rings on your cylinders. Oil then enters the combustion chambers and burns when you start the engine. If it continues to burn when running in particular when you accelerate it will also indicate ring/cylinder failure. It can also be from a failing head gasket where oil travels from the lubrication system into the combustion chamber. Some of the anti smoke additives available at the auto supply store do help.

I doubt you are seeing white as you say is smells like exhaust. White is coolant in the combustion chamber or exhaust system.

Hope this helps you.

Oil in exhaust

sounds to me like you have a piston seal going out. if your mechanic savey you can take the exhaust manifold off and find the piston that is leaking and fix it your self if not i suggest taking it to the dealer. might be expensive.
