Question about Adaptec ASH-1205SA PCI 2 POrt Serial ATA Controller (2047700)

Motherboard has two built-in Sata connectors. after installing controller I can either use the onboard connectore or the controller but not both.

Check the BIOS settings. You may want to try AHCI settings or RAID settings and turn off LEGACY settings. The ports are controlled by the board itself, which is handled by the BIOS. So, the best place to start is there.

Removing and Replacing Parts, click on - Drives, in the list.

After details on the power cable, and data cable, the Optical Drive is the first drive listed.

SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.

Depress the Drive Release Latch, slide the drive towards the Back of the computer, lift up slightly to remove SATA data cable, and SATA power cable; THEN remove optical drive.

P3 DVD connector


Well........................

The numbering for power supply cables, differs from one pre-built computer manufacturer, to the next.

GENERALLY, a P3 power cable is a 4-pin Peripheral power cable,

(Also misnomered as a 'Molex' power cable.
Molex came out with the design for the power cable CONNECTOR.
The name stuck. Kinda' like calling an adjustable open-end wrench, a 'Crescent wrench' )

A P4 power cable is usually a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable,

This power cable was brought out to provide more power for the motherboard, and specifically the Processor. (CPU)
Does NOT connect to an optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

DOES need to be connected to motherboard though, because it is POWER for the Processor!

Moving on.............

Let's dispense with the antiquated numbering of the power cables, and show you the real information you need;

There are two types of Optical Drives out there, currently being used;
1) IDE. Also known as PATA.

2) SATA

An IDE optical drive will use a 4-pin Peripheral power cable,

Note the rounded corners on top.
When plugging in one of these power cables, just always remember the rounded corners go on TOP.

The data cable used is a flat IDE ribbon cable. These are general examples,

I would like you to look at the connector end, and specifically the Locating Lug on one side of the connector,

This style of Locating Lug consists of two small 'bars'.
There are types where it is filled in. Just one solid lug.

The Locating Lug lines up with a Cutout, on the optical drive.
(Or IDE/PATA harddrive)

IF, there is no Locating Lug on your IDE/PATA flat ribbon cable, post back in a Comment.
I will show you the proper way to connect it, using the Red stripe on the side of the cable.

If you have a SATA optical drive, it uses a SATA power cable.
This is a general example,

SATA power cable connector has 15-pin.

To install the cable connector, line the L-shaped opening, with the L shape on the optical drive connector.

Tip: Turn this L over to the left, then turn upside down.
The small 'foot' of the L, always points DOWN, when installing connector.


The SATA data cable connector, that plugs into the optical drive, should be a 90 degree bent elbow.
The connector end that plugs into the motherboard, should be a Straight connector.

The SATA power cable connector, and the SATA data cable connector; MAY have a Lock on top.
Usually a small depression, or Tab, or 'bulb'.
Depress with your thumb tip, to install, or remove the cable.

(Hmmm, betting now the P3 power cable may be a SATA power cable.

Connections to the hard drive


The Harddrive is a SATA unit.

Uses a SATA data cable, and a SATA power cable.

SATA data cable, and connector on motherboard, example;

Between the SATA data cable connector, and the SATA power cable connector; the SATA data cable connector is the shorter of the two in width.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.

The connector end used on the harddrive side, and optical drive side, (CD/DVD drive), is usually a 90 degree Bent Elbow.
The connector end that plugs into the motherboard, is a Straight connector.

NOTE* Color of connectors does NOT matter.
Most of the time the SATA data connectors on the motherboard, are different colors.

This is to help discern what number of SATA data connector it is.
Four SATA data connectors on the motherboard?

SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3, and SATA 4;
Or:
SATA 0, SATA 1, SATA 2, and SATA 3?

SATA 0, or SATA 1, is usually reserved for the Harddrive.
The Primary harddrive with the Operating System on it.
(Unless you have harddrives set in a RAID configuration)

DOES NOT MATTER WHAT SATA DATA CONNECTOR, you plug into, on the motherboard.

Want to plug the harddrive into SATA 3, or SATA 4?
Go ahead.
NO matter what SATA connector on the motherboard that you plug into, BIOS will find the harddrive.

Note the L-shape in the connector.
Has to line up on the L-shape on the harddrive, optical drive, or motherboard, SATA data connector.

There is usually a lock on the connector. This you may not see.
Sometimes there is a little 'bump' on the connector. Depress with the thumbnail to install the cable, or remove.

NOTE*
IF, your SATA harddrive has a provision for plugging in a SATA power cable, AND a 4-pin Peripheral power cable; ONLY plug the SATA power cable in.

Using BOTH types of power cables will BURN the harddrive up.

The straight connector on the cable plugs into the motherboard.
(Can be straight connector on both ends through, but isn't CORRECT)

1 Black SATA connector, and 1 Blue SATA connector, at the bottom of the black Ram Memory slots.

1 White SATA connector, and 3 Black SATA connectors, right next to the where 24-pin ATX main power cable, plugs into the motherboard.

Originally the Master harddrive, should plug into SATA1 connector on the motherboard.

If you look real close, next to all of those SATA connectors on the motherboard, you may see SATA0, SATA1, SATA2, SATA3, SATA4, and SATA5, printed right next to them on the motherboard.

The beauty of SATA:

DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU PLUG IN WHAT, on those SATA connectors.
Use ANY one you wish, and plug whatever SATA device into it, that you wish.

BIOS will find the SATA device.
No matter what SATA connector you plug into, and no matter what SATA device.

What a minute, this news just came in.............

The Blue SATA connector on the motherboard, under the black Ram Memory slots, is SATA0.
The Black SATA connector next to it is SATA1.

If you have SAS harddrives (Serial Attached SCSI), the power cable's connector has a provision, to plug the SATA data cable into it also.
If you do not have that particular SAS power cable it's OK.

You can just use a separate SATA power cable, (90 degree elbow to harddrive/optical drive), and a separate SATA data cable.

I'LL TELL YOU UPFRONT i HAVE ONLY INSTALLED SATA ON A NEW SYSTEM SO MY ANSWER MAY NOT BE CORRECT IN ALL SITUATIONS
Question is vague. Are you replacing a drive or building a new system? SATA drives have a dedicated plug on the Mother Board. Of course you already know you can't replace an IDE with a SATA without an adapter (Ebay has them for about $8) or the Bios is incompatible. The power is on the Motherboard and does not have a connector from the power supply like an IDE has.

Install IDE devices (drives / DVD / CDROM) sata


IDE devices have different "data" and "power" connectors than SATA drives.

So, you need a motherboard with IDE connectors, if you wish to connect an IDE disk-drive (or CD/DVD), and you need a motherboard with SATA connectors, if you wish to connect a SATA device.

Similarly, the connectors on the power-supply must be compatible with the sockets on the disk-drive (or CD/DVD) drives, so that the devices can get power.

You could possibly purchase a short IDE-to-SATA power-adapter, if you have a SATA device, but there are no SATA power-connectors on your power-supply.

I couldn't find illustration, but you'll need SATA cable and 4 small orange/yellow connectors in the corner of motherboard are your SATA connectors.

Hi,
if you,ve purchased a SATA drive.
Then you should have SATA Connectors On The Motherboard.
If you look carefully you should see SATA1 And SATA2 if applicable. they,ll look like a small black/white piece of plastic connector. shaped similar to a letter *L* this is the sata connector, you may already have a hard-drive on 1 of them. ( red Cable ) The 4 pin audio cable, goes from the rear of your DVD Drive, you should have 2. 1 for analogue 1 for digital. this connects Audio from your Drive to motherboard, slim grey cable ( usually ) look towards the rear of your motherboard for this, usually towards the audio out ( if you have onboard soundcard )
connect this to Audio/sound ( you,ll probably have 3 located close together.
