Apple iPod touch Logo
Posted on Oct 01, 2009

Soon as USB is connected to computer - It freezes up and will not repond until the ipod is reset, using menu and center button. Freezes up also, when IPOD Power Adapter is connected for charging battery. Have to use Travel Charger Model DAPPIPODTC01 Thru Docking Connector at bottom of Ipod to recharge battery. Ipod will play music as long as it is not connected to computer thru Docking Connector. Top of Ipod Mini connector will play music thru Headphones or ext. audio amplifier. Please let me know if this going to be major problem to fix (re: hard drive or main logic board problem)

My 2GB Apple MP3 player freezes at times. I have been able to fixed the problem by allowing the battery to completely deplete. Is there another way?

no unfortunately this is a problem with 1-3rd gen iPod Nano's What i means is that the flash memory is starting to fail. If it freezes next time you can do this
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
this is a soft reset and makes it easier then waiting till the battery dies.
If you need further assistance please feel free to follow up with a comment and i will be here to assist you. If this assisted you please feel free to rate the solution. thanks and have a great day.

To reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector) ipodg1-2.gif ipodg3.gif
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

If this does not work then you may have to re-format the ipod in itunes. If you click on the ipod in itunes you should see a RESTORE option on the main page.

My mini ipod freezing, showing charger sign i could not turn it to menu

I would attempt putting the ipod into disc mode and see if your ipod is recognized by the computer after you reconnect it. I have researched this issue and found a knowledge base article on apples web site that may help you out with this.
Here are the steps to do it...

Putting iPods with a Click Wheel into disk mode
  1. Before placing the iPod into disk mode, you should verify that it is charged.
  2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.ht1363_2.jpg
  5. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

If it won't go into disc mode while not connected to your computer, try doing the above steps with it already connected to you computer.
If none of these steps work, it is sadly probably time to get a new ipod. I hope that it does help you out though. Good luck :)

Ipod doesn't work when not connected to computer

After you eject if from the computer and it locks up press and hold the center button while pressing down on the menu button. This will reboot the IPod. What charger are you using? Is the charger plugged into a usb hub or does it get power from an electrical outlet?

When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time is preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on. Good luck, and I hope this helps.
