I have had a fair amount of experience with emachines 5300 series and they are very prone to overheating problems. It is quite a chore and not for the faint hearted to dissassemble and clean these, fortuneately I have found it to be unnecessary. Get some canned air, I get mine at Sam's and blow in where the hot air comes out when it is running, if overheating is the problem you will create a small dust storm. I have even had success blowing in the vent with lung power.

Why does a MSI VX600 laptop PC shut down frequently?

It might be overheating. When your PC shuts downs and it's hot to the touch in some areas you might want to try this: I would buy a bottle of compressed air and I would clean/blow out the fans and exhaust port/s.

Automatically shutdown, overheating, not charging

Not holding a charge is either a bad battery or a bad charger.
Overheating and shutting down is quite common.
1. Overheating can be caused by the cooling air passageway being clogged resulting in little or no air movement.
2. It can also be caused by a bad fan on the heat sink.
Both are easy fixes.
#1. Clean the airway with a can of air.
#2. Disassemble the laptop and replace the cooling fan.

I have an acer aspire one D255. one night i was using the computer, and it just shut off. i thought it overheated so I put it down and went to sleep, when i woke up it still wouldnt turn on. i thought it...

It may well have overheated and if it did it could have damaged the uProcessor. Before you condemn it to the bin, remove the power sources. Remove the hard drive and Ram.
Power it up on an AC adapter. At this point the laptop should complete POST and be asking "Where are my things". and offer you the BIOS menu.
If it does, remove the power source and install the RAM. Start it up again and it should ask for the hard drive.
Power it down, fit the hard drive and power up.
If it fails at this point it has a hard drive error or if it failed with the RAM a RAM error.

Hope that helps.

Laptop intermittently hangs after evry 2-3 minutes...want free on line help

it is either infected with a virus or it has some hardware issues. try reseating the ram. another common issue is if the fan is dirty which leads to overheating resulting in the laptop shutting down frequently. try to clean it with a painting brush & vacuum cleaner.

I have a Compaq NW9440 Mobile Workstation - it keeps shutting down every 15 minutes or so. At times, it will not restart right away. I thought it may have been the CMOS Battery, so I replaced it. It's...

The most common problem you get with a laptop is overheating, this can cause for it to shut down while operating to prevent more damage.

You will know if your laptop is overheating if it happens one ore more of the following:
-The keyboard and the bottom of your laptop are very hot when the laptop is working.
-The CPU fans are working all the time at maximum rotation speed and operate much louder than before.
-The laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning. When it just started, the laptop was shutting down after 1-2 hours and how it shuts down after 5-10 minutes of operation.
-The laptop works fine when it runs idle, but shuts down as soon as you start using any memory demanding applications (DVD player, image editing software, video editing software, etc.).
Follow this steps to avoid overheating:
-Don't use your laptop in full sunlight for extended periods
-Don't leave the laptop in a closed car on a sunny day
-Don't place the laptop on or near extreme heat sources, such as radiators, hot air vents
-Turn off your laptop before putting it in your carry bag
-Turn off your laptop when not in use for a long period
-Work on an even surface as much as possible, not on your lap!
-Clean the air vents in your laptop regularly by using a can of compressed air
-Get more space under your computer by propping it up on something when it's on a desk
-Consider purchasing a laptop cooling pad
-Consider purchasing an external fan

To clean your laptop's cooling system:
-Shut down the laptop ie do not leave it suspended, sleeping or hibernating.
-Unplug all cables from the unit and remove the battery pack
-Get a can of compressed air and blow it into all vents around your computer - this should clear out any dust and hair.
-Do Not use a vacuum cleaner.

If it is not overheating, then it is a hardware failure. Could be the RAM memory, or the motherboard. You can only corner the problem by testing with different RAM modules or motherboard.

Hi,

The reason for the sudden shut down of your computer is because of overheating of the 'case', where the CPU is mounted. Overheating can be due to dust accumulation on the heat sink, which prevents dissipation of heat. The possible solution to combat overheating issue is to keep the laptop dust free by cleaning out debris at the vents frequently. Note that a laptop has a much smaller cooling area in comparison with desktops and hence laptops tend to accumulate dust a lot quicker than desktops. This is because all the dust/debris, in the case of laptops, accumulate in the cooling fins.

My laptop keeps shutting down at random times. I

Computers may not be smarter than people, but if they’re designed properly, they will shut themselves down before overheating to the extent that they do themselves damage.

If the smart person keeps turning the notebook back on and figures out a way to foil the protection, the laptop is probably doomed. Once a laptop shuts down for thermal event protection, it may refuse to power back up for a fixed period of time, five or ten minutes, or it may begin to boot and shut down immediately as soon as it boots to the point that it can figure out that its too hot.

The over-temperature protection is generally a BIOS rather than an operating system function, so one sign of an overheated laptop is one that shuts itself down while you’re using it and then refuses to boot as far as the operating system unless you leave it alone for an hour or so to cool down.

Unless you’ve been working in a very unfriendly environment, high temperatures, direct sunlight, etc, you should take even a single overheating shutdown as a warning to back up your data at the first opportunity and to give the cooling system a serious cleaning.
Good luck

try pulling ram modules out and reseating them. this is most frequent cause beside overheating, but then if it's overheated it would shut down , not restart.

Frequent freezing of mouse, and unexpected shut down

the mouse is freezing because, you have either too many programmes running at start up, conflicting drivers, slow start up anti virus programmes, or you may have a virus or trojan/spyware programme running in the background. The shut down could be a processor overheating problem, so check all your vents and fans for clogged up dust and ensure your pc is well ventillated.
