My wireless HP 4500 printer won't scan. It prints perfectly , but I get a message saying "Sorry, scanner could not be initialized." (Scanner not found).

If you're using Vista, this happens all too regularly with HP printers. I've had a few where I have to uninstall everything then re-install to make things work.
Two weeks later the same thing, same process.
Try downloading latest drivers from HP and see if that helps. HP don't admit there's a problem.
Don't seem to have this problem with Epson printers tho.

There are several possibilities. Did you launch the scan from the computer or the scanner buttons? Stop at the point that works in these various trouble-shooting options.
1) Make sure that the HP Digital Imaging Monitor monitoring program was running if launching from the scanner. (Make sure the HP driver is installed not the generic OS driver.) The software is available from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1146331& select your OS and then press Next. Click on Driver to download.
2) The scanner requires bidirectional communication with the computer. Try a new data cable and a direct connection (if you use a USB hub or print server). Try a different USB port and make sure that the ports aren't disabled for security or power-savings. (The first is in the Device Manager; the second is part of the advanced settings of the Screen Saver.)
3) Use the HP Director or Solution Center to check the scanner status (this is in the full-software form HP). If it is available for your OS, you should uninstall the generic OS driver and disconnect the data cable before installling the software. Even if you have this installed, check if you need to patch the software.
4) Download and run the HP Scan Diagnostic Tool to test the scanner. http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-926&h_lang=en&h_client=s-h-e016-1&h_keyword=dg-SDU&jumpid=ex_r4155/hho/ipg/ccdoc/scan_diag/ .
5) Can you acquire scans from the computer with non-HP software? Windows XP, Vista and 7 can acquire scans from Paint (File > Import from Scanner or Camera). Vista and Win7 also have Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan).
6) Disconnect the data cable from the computer. Then Start > Run > regedit . This launches the registry editor (Run as Administrator for Vista or Win7). Back up the entire registry first (File > Export, follow the steps you see and select all.) Locate the HP registry item: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} and highlight the section in brackets. Right click on Lower Filters (string value) and delete it. Close regedit (Save changes) and restart the computer. Reconnect the data cable after the reboot.
7) Uninstall and reinstall the HP software driver (again remove the data cable after the uninstall and keep it unplugged until the software requests connecting the cable).
8) Check if you need to update the BIOS or USB drivers for your computer (see the manufacturer's site) and Windows Update.
9) Check if the scanner runs if connected (after software install) on another computer. If it doesn't work on another computer, you probably need to replace the unit.
I hope this helps.
