Laptop drives are generally a snap to change. Plug in and out and held in by a couple screws. Wait till you get it and the screw locations will be easy to find as you will be able to see by the holes in the unit where the screws are.

As you said that you haven't used the computer for long time then it could be the motherboard which has gone faulty not the HDD or DVD.
Try to use the new HDD with this old motherboard.
Or else you can seek help of Any Geek Squad or computer vendor.

In case if you have any more trouble do contact back in Fixya.
Thank you

How do you normally backup your computer? Do you burn files to cd/dvd disks or to an external usb hard drive?
Can you boot to safemode desktop?
Getting a pre-imaged drive means Dell will send you the hard drive configured for your system ready to startup and go. You don't need to fresh install Vista on the hard drive. Don't know if they actually will do that?
So the first priority here is to try and get your data off of your hard drive. I recommend using a BartPE live CD. You can create this CD and put burning softwre on it as well as network drivers etc. You would boot with the BartPE CD and see if you can access your files on the Vista hard drive. If you can then you can copy them over.
Here is a link to BartPE website.

How do you reformat the hard drive on a dell inspiron 6400 with vista

Asuming you have the Vista DVD and the correct installation key... Put the DVD into the machine and restart or turn the machine on. It should try to boot fro the DVD drive. If it does not then you will have to go into the BIOS and set the boot order to DVD drive 1st.

There also may be a chance it is booting to a menu that asks you what you want to boot to. Choose DVD drive.

Removing CD drive on dell inspiron 9300

while the PC is on eject the DVD tray and turn off the computer, underneath the laptop you should find a screw which is holding it in place, when you find the correct screw and unscrewed it pull gently on the DVD and it should slide out, put your new one in and replace the screw, job done :)

Cd/dvd rom not working

go into device manager and see if your drive is listed or has an exclamation point beside it.if you dont know how to open device manger go to start menu and click help and search device manager.if there is an exclamation point ! click it and it will tell you the may need to download a new driver or reinstall the old driver. the only other possibility is the drive is dead :(

Dell inspiron 2200

at the front panel of the dvd drive where u normally press the eject button look carefully u will find a very small hole some where in around the eject button. now look for a broom stick or any tiny but straight object that can go in through the hole. put the broom stick into the hole gradually not with force. the dvd player will eject if it doesnt eject then i dont know.
to replace a new dvd player u just unplug the formal one from yr system and insert the new one thats all. make sure no screws r holding the dvd player b4 u do so.
hope this helps
do come back n tell us if don
thank u

try to run a repair on your OS. What happened there was that your virtual cd software replaced some default drivers from the OS.

Hope this helps.
