Question about Nikon COOLPIX L18 Digital Camera

Coolpix L18 battery life problem

I have the same problem with my Coolpix L18. Batteries drain incredibly quickly, even when the camera is powered off. How quickly? I've taken less than 100 photos total and gone through 4 sets of brand new batteries.

I've seen this problem reported in multiple places. Nikon needs to own up to this problem.

SOURCE: Batteries die

YA DEFINITELY IT IS NOT THE PROBLEM OF THE BATTERY. UNKNOWINGLY YOU DETECTED THE RIGHT PROBLEM IT IS EXACTLLY THE PROBLEM OF YOUR coolpix. BUT THIS PROBLEM COULD OCCUR BECAUSE OF SO MANY REASONS . TRY RECHARGEABLE BATTERYS IF THAT DOES NOT HELPS.CHECK OUT IF THERE IS ANY LOOSE CONNECTION.CLEAN THE SURFACE WHERE YOU ARE INSERTING THE BATTERYS WITH DRY CLOTH.IT COULD ALSO BE THE PROBLEM OF CIRCUIT INTERNALLY .THIS OCCURS IF THE UNIT IS BANGED SOMEWHERE TO THE WALL BY MISTAKE OR FELL DOWN ON THE GROUND.
SO IF YOU THINK IF THERE IS ANY INTERNAL DAMAGE GET IT REPAIRED THROUGH A GOOD MECHANIC TO MAKE IT USEFUL FOR LONG TIME.
IF YOU FIND THIS SOLUTION HELPFUL RATE THIS AS "FIXYA" .WHAT EVER THE ABOVE INFORMATION LISTED YOU APPLY DO IT VERY CAREFULLY.THANK YOU FOR USING FIXYA.

What does battery exhausted mean?

It means the batteries are drained or empty. Put in a fresh set of batteries, or recharge them if you're using rechargeable batteries.

Even with new batteries, the screen says batteries exhausted on Coolpix L18. Sometimes by switching the position of the batteries, it turns on. (I'm not talking about changing the polarity...just changing...

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, chances are that your camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

I have a Nikon coolpix L18 and can only take around 10 pics wiht it, with alkaline aa batteries, before I get the message "batteries exhausted". What can I do? Is the camer defective?

Well, alkaline batteries don't last long in a power-draining camera like the Coolpix. Try some rechargeables and keep spares fully charged.

L18 exhaust batteries even when camera is turned off. Have used both alkaline and NiMH. Only way to "save" batteries is to open the battery compartment when not in use. Is there a problem with this camera?

No you should alway store electronics that is not being used for a duration remove batteries
it you put the batteries in the freezer it also extends the life of the battery

I keep getting "Battery Exhausted" messages, with new batteries

you have to use only very good quality batteries ...I have a philips..and if I do not put alcaline quality bateries in it ..it do not even power up ....and even with this expensive ones it eats 'em like snacks...
by the way ...keep the batteries inside only when you shoot cause all this new cameras with display and so ...consumes the batteries even when they are powered off ..
my advise is to buy some accumulators the kind you charge on the home power plug.....so in this way .. you will always have strong power into them ..and the cost its worthily ..

Batteries

2 areas to check; 1) are they "good" batteries? High quality, name brand, fresh (as per use before date on package)? 2) do you have the camera set up to use that type of batteries? In the setup menu, there is a power source set-up function. Make sure that matches the battery type you are attempting to use. The best batteries for any AA powered camera are the Energizer Lithium (not rechargeable) cells. A bit expensive, but they pay for themselves through long life, and less headaches.
