Question about Garden

Mower takes too long to pick up speed

I have a 48" Bunton walk behind. When I put it in gear it takes several seconds(like 15 to 20) for it to kick in.
I bought the mower used 3 wks. ago, but all the belts are fairly new.

Check that the belts are at right tension as they could be sliping slitly and that is why it is taking the time to kick in ,try tightening the belts a bit

My scag 48 inch walk belt driven ,is having trouble going up slight hills , already change the clutch springs

I also have a 48" Skag wall behind mower. Have you checked the tension on each wheel's belt when under load? It that where the slippage is, or is there a slow down on the engine itself? If the engine is slowing down...several things to check...needs tune up...plugs...I also use premium gas in my mowers and get better performance. Check all belts for where and slippage. Is it engine or some mech connection?

Hope this helps

How do I fix the speed control on an Ariens walk behind lawn mower?

do you mean the throttle cable? as its a push mower im gussing it is. If the mower is relatively new then it will be fitted with an opc (or dead mans handle) in which case there is no need for a throttle control as the engine speed is governed and should only be used at the fixed goverened speed

Ariens self propelled hit a rock will not start clanks and smokes Crankshaft does not seem to be bent. Somtimes kicks back when trying to start.

If you have kick back or the mower backfires you probably have a partially sheared flywheel key.

The good news is they are cheap and designed to shear to protect the motor from damage.

You can take the recoil cover off the engine and then remove the nut that holds on the flywheel and gently pry off the flywheel.

You should see a mangled flywheel key that was under the nut holding the flywheel on. Take it to a mower parts store and match it up with a replacement. Put the new one back in and reinstall the flywheel.

That should do it! Good luck and be careful!
