Take the pen cap out of where it is stuck and replace the belt. Most likely the smoke was from the belt slipping around the gear and getting hot. Did the smoke smell like burning rubber?

If the roller brush cannot be rotated easily by hand, it is likely that debris is jammed inside the end caps.Make note of the direction arrows on the end caps as you remove the roller brush. You will need to know this for reinstallation. The end caps are fastened with stop nuts. Removal of one will allow the inner shaft to be extracted for examination and cleaning. An old toothbrush is a good cleaning tool. Reinstall the inner shaft and stop nut. Check for free rotation of the brush roller. Place a new belt over the brush roller and reinstall the brush roller, being careful to observe the position of the arrows on the end caps. Inspect the motor shaft and remove any old belt residue before installing the new belt on the shaft.

Not sucking, smoking

Hi If its smoking the belt needs replaced. Check the top of the hood for two or three crosshead screws; two at the front and one under neath the duster part. The belt may be on its way out.
Also if its not sucking anything up, it may well be clogged. Check the drive belt area where the main dust channel is, top and bottom hose too.
Also make sure than the filters in the bin/pleated cones are completely clear of dust. If washing make sure the filters are completely dry before putting them back in.

Eureka Vacuum is smoking!

The brush roll is probably not spinning properly. It may have dust and hair under the end caps. Try to remove the end caps to clean under them. If it is 5 years old it likely needs a new brush roll anyway.

I was vacuuming with the Dyson DC 17 and sucked up a berber carpet string by accident and after cutting and pulling it all out of the bottom brush part, the brush no longer spins but the suction part...

The belt could be snapped. If this model has a brush protected belt then it has to be repaired by a service call. If however you can get to the brush roll belt by removing the bottom sole plate (turning over the vacuum so that you're looking at the base) with the plastic catches undone where you can see the belt then check to see if it has snapped. If it hasn't snapped then it may just need readjusting.

If you can't see the belt and has protective covers that can't be undone then the model has a brush control system that has to be replaced by someone who can do Dyson repairs.

Hoover Vacuum model U4471 making a very strange noise and letting of a smoke smell

The Elite upright may need to have its drive belt checked. Check that the machine roller is still working. Then turn the vacuum off and locate the screws on the floor head by turning the machine over. If you remove a couple of screws the floor head will come off and you can check the belt. Usually old threads and hair can stop the roller bar from moving properly or may have got to the belt. Ensure that it moves freely simply by turning the roller with your hand. If it doesn't then its possible that the roller needs to be cleaned or the belt needs to be replaced. Drive belts are easy to get for most Hoover products; a smoke smell like burning rubber usually indicates the drive belt is about to give up or has simply snapped. Dont forget to rate if this solution has worked for you. Ty.

I had the same problem with the belt breaking and the roller not spinning. I read about giving the roller a couple of revolutions to seat the belt, so I put another new belt on. It still didn't spin. I realized it was the end cap that was not spinning so I took off the roller and gently pried off the end cap and there was an enormous amount of thread spun around inside of the small area. I had to keep digging it out with tweezers. Quite unbelievable. I also found that when it spits out instead of sucking up, it needs to be cleaned. Check all areas, especially the part that is round that you have to twist open. (Inside, behind the foam filter and UP).
