    Thanks for the reply.

for the past two weeks all i had to do was plug in my monitor directly into the back of my laptop and then turn my laptop on, most of the time the monitor fired up and worked normally on start up, i didnt even have to hold the 'fn' + f5, if it didnt work, i would right click on my desktop, click on properties, then settings in the display properties box and tick on the box that says extend my windows desktop onto this monitor and it sorted it.

Now it just doesnt seen to want to work, i know there is a connection between the laptop and monitor because the monitor will come out of standby when i have told the laptop to allow the extension of the desktop to the monitor but the screen stays blank,,,,?

    any other suggestions?

Hello tonyphats,

How are you trying to use the monitor? Just connecting it to the laptop? I know on most laptops you have to select to use the external monitor it won't just come up. You usually have to hold down the 'Fn' button and then press 'F5' or 'F7' to toggle between - monitor only, monitor and lcd, and lcd only.

If you are trying that, what happens? Does anything show on the screen?

    No problem,

What operating system are you using? Sounds like XP, it's good news that the monitor goes out of stand-by, that means that it is most likely a configuration problem.

When you go to properties now, is the extend desktop to this monitor option available? What about the option that reads; identify? That will usually flash a number on the monitors to let you know which one is which.

Does your monitor show up in the device manager? You can view that by; right clicking 'my computer' on desktop, select properties, select hardware tab on top, click Device Manager button, click Monitor +... does it only show your LCD or is your other monitor there too? If your other monitor is there, then I bet it is the problem I mentioned originally.

Even if the monitor is unplugged, the option is stored on what to do with a monitor by default when it is plugged in... so if by accident the option to switch back and forth between lcd + monitor was pressed it may save that so it wouldnt work automatically the next time you plugged it in. Do you know how or what buttons need to be pressed to toggle between extended desktop, lcd only, monitor only? I think HP is different, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Also, what type of monitor are you using, through researching I found a lot of people have had similar problems to you, and found out that their monitor was broken. You said it just worked before, do you have another pc you can plug it into to verify it is working now?

Using notebook display and external monitor: HP Pavilion zd8205us primary display is garbled, secondary display is clear and good, It doesn't matter which display device you set as primary or secondary

try to switch the blue VGA cable that is connected from the laptop to the external monitor. You may also restart your laptop and set aside the external monitor to check if the laptop is still experiencing garbled display... If it still is, then it is a monitor issue and need to address to HP personnel by calling HP hotline. Otherwise your issue will be resolved by simply doing that..

HP Pavilion zd7000 lap top Power on issues

I just built/repaired one of these the other day. My son uses it now. Motherboards are notorious for going out. However you need to give more description to your problem. You just say it has issues but that doesnt really tell me anything. If you turn it on and get no beeps and no screen and everything seems dead except for the power light then it needs the system board replaced. But if you see the hard drive light running like normal with nothing on the screen then try it with an external monitor. If the external monitor works then the screen has died but the motherboard video card components are good. If you still got nothing then the board is bad and will need replaced.
I'm sorry it is almost always bad news on these.

You still might have a problem with your connector. It might have a cold soldered joints. Try to power on your laptop with no keyboard cover in the way were you can have an access to the place where cable is connected to your motherboard then try to wiggle it a little. If your video is coming up and down, you have a cold soldered joints. Another considerations would be:
1. Your LCD cable
2. Your LCD goes bad
