Might need a new receiver.Did you hook up the receiver hot. If your fan came with pull chains, undo your light wire from the fan and wire nut it to house hot. This will tell you if your light is OK or if it is the receiver.
The grand isle will work with only that remote, you will need to contact Hunter at 1-901-745-9222 to get the remote you need. If you let your landlord know your problem they may re-imburse you for the money incurred purchasing the remote. It's worth it to get the remote though, this is a high quality fan.
It is probably less expensive to get a replacement. When there is a burning smell, it is usually the motor that is failing. BUT just to be sure , take down the canopy cover and try and determine where the odor is coming from. Is it in the wiring , or definitely in the motor?
For the fan alone, you hook the black wire from the fan to the black wire in your electrical box; white to white. If there is a red wire it's for the light, hook it to the black wire from the box. If you let us know what wires are available in your box and what's coming out of the fan and whether the fan has a light and whether the box is wired for separate lighting, we could go a long way towards solving your problem in more definitive terms. Hunter is a premium fan, their package directions are good.
Check power from the t-stat to the motor or relay depending on how yours is configured for control voltage. If power is present at the motor. You will need a meter that can read amperage, take a ampdraw on the leads of the motor. See what this reading is, on the motor there should be a rating for LRA (locked rotor amps) if the amp draw exceeds this reading your motor is bad. You may also have a split phase capacitor installed which helps start the motor is so and you have a meter that reads in micro farads you could check the capacitor. the symbol for mico farads looks like a uf. Just make sure you discharge the capacitor to ground with a screw driver or insulated tool, if not it will shock you severly. Another thing you might look for is a reset button on the motor. Most likely this will be a red button somewhere near the bottom side of the motor.
