Try tapping it on the side
-only, only, only use the more expensive JVC tapes. They keep their tension far better than cheaper brands. Also, they won't rub off their oxide coatings on the heads as easily, avoiding the 'clogging' of the heads (which thereby requires constant cleaning-further damaging the heads).
-when and if you do get E- errors do a complete rewind or fast forward to the end of the tape in order to pull out tape slack. Then remove battery and tape for a while. If still screwed, then yes, sharply tap (not hard!) on the closed tape door. That may reposition those tiny switches that I mentioned earlier and get you going again.
-NEVER, EVER, EVER, leave tapes in the machine when not in use....it creates problems for the heads and the mechanisms.
-Don't leave the battery on the camera when not in use for extended periods of time. It can create problems with respect to resetting the computer controlled logic.
-there are little switches and interlocks that provide electrical feedback about the mechanical status of things to the main processor of the camera (ie. tape/no tape in camera, door open/closed etc). Over time, the mechanics get out of adjustment because of usage, humidity and certainly rough handling. So: treat the mechanisms very, very, very delicately. Don't use/store the camera in humid conditions, hot conditions or very cold conditions. Certainly don't leave it in your car---ever!
-get the camera "cleaned and ajusted" regularly to avoid these problems. (I know...more $$$$)
-I keep bags of dessicant in an insulated camera bag with the camera to maintain dryness and optimal temperatures during storage.

Shuts off when trying to play or record

This could be due to the VHS tape sticking on the tape reel, that triggers the overload and the shutdown. Try fast forwarding if possible.

Tape deck on Panasonic RX-DT680 boombox issue

I think this should be a simple fix! The deck will have switches at the top of the cassette compartment. These detect the tape and also select it for type - metal or chrome etc. These switches have become bent or damaged or have dirt on them.

My VCR/DVD combo wont play a VHS tape when inserted. Each time I insert a VHS tape, it shoots it right back out and sometimes unravels the tape around the apparatuses inside the VCR. It won't reco

the tape coming back out and unravels the tape means the loading mechanism is the problem----when a tape goes in it loads the tape down, then it pulls the tape out of the cassette and puts it up against the drum with the video heads-----many of these are belt driven and a bad belt or belts will cause this----it is called the loading and or transport mechanism.......when it fails the arms come back but the tape does not get rewound back into the cassette so it mangles it when the cassette door on the tape closes----most likely a belt or the drive idler which also rewinds and fast forwards the tape.

Toshiba dvr670ku - vhs tape won't play, shuts recorder off

look to see if tape will fully load and if FF or REWIND work, if not a transport problem, drive mechanism not moving the tape, unit will sense this and shut unit off----even a problem in the loading mechanism for the VHS tape not loading the tape all the way will do the same thing.

Drivers-side rear door won't engage-interior bell chimes constantly

Make sure the rear cargo lid is shut. Then if it still appears to be the door, then remove the jam switch in the door sill. The switches usually separate the wires when the door closes. You do not want to lose the wiring inside the doorjam and you do not want to leave a hole open either.
Tie a string on the wiring and/or tape the wiring to the doorjam until you can get a new switch. Tape the wire ends to prevet shorting.

The machine won't erase my tapes? Is there a chance it could be a faulty machine?

Does the erase light come on and the tape rewinds? Or does it just beep when you try? Could be a bad erase switch, sometimes pressing harder will do the trick. If it just beeps, try another tape.

I have a tape which I'm anxious to play to convert to a CD, but it just won't play ! It will fast wind both ways but on play just shuts off. (It hasn't been played for a long time) It does...

If you wind the tape by hand (with a pencil or screw driver etc.)is the tape easy to turn or move from one end to the other with out any binds? If not It may be wound unevenly, smacking it down on a flat surface a few times on each side will usually free it up. Hope this helps.

My Hitachi VM H710A plays just fine, and the picture looks fine. But when it playsback footage or records footage, five to ten seconds later, it stops abruptly, and flashes the word "TAPE". First thing I must add, is that I was using a prerecorded videotape, and was testing it from the beginning of the cassette and the middle of the cassette. I thought maybe the heads were dirty, and so I cleaned them using a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. I cleaned the head drum with a piece of paper soaked with rubbing alcohol so that I wouldn't get any fibres in the heads. I waited for it to dry and then I put a cleaning cassette inside. To which, it still stopped abruptly five to ten seconds in during playback. I then decided to look at the manual of the camcorder and see the symptom. It says that due to temperature changes that it might cause this symptom. I placed it in a cool room and left it there all day and checked on it, and the camcorder is still doing the same thing as before hand. Then another cause said that it might sense some moisture. I made sure that the camcorder was dry externally and internally, and yet still, same problem. Thats when I decided to take it apart and look inside to see if there was anything odd inside the camcorder causing it to function the way it does. The belt seemed to be working fine, and there was no missing parts. The tracking poles and path alignment was fine, and not loose. Everything simply seemed just fine. So I am unsure as to why my camcorder is operating like this.
