No not necessary- just hook up the red and black leads to the appropriate sides of the battery and leave on overnight.

Battery hisses when charging battery

Is this battery the type that has the removable tops? If so, check the water level in each cell. Use distilled water to fill the cells to appropriate levels. Be careful of over-flow. Battery acid is very corrosive. Other considerations; battery is being over-charged, battery is worn and will not hold a charge. Auto Zone and Advance Auto will check/test a battery for you.
The negative wires go to ground. Has there been add-ons to the electrical system? Clean the Pos and Neg terminals and cables.

Dead battery, replaced battery and alternator but still no charge!

if its not charging while running at14.5 volts or so you have a charging problem mabey no power to the alternator if its charging at 14.5 or so and the batery load tests good and its going dead over night you have a draw from some component in the system.

Wont start charged battery cleaned termials , just clicks

I would double check the charge of the battery. You may have one or two dead cells which will decreace the battery voltage to where it will do what you say it is doing. Remove battery , take to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto and ask them to check charge and load. Sometimes batteries just go bad.
Please inform as to your progress. Good luck.

MY 1994 EXPLORER WAS SITTING AND HADN"T BEEN

remove battery and have it tested a your local auto parts store. Most auto parts stores like autozone or advance auto will test it for free. batterys will loose charge if they are old and have been sitting around for a period of time. If you have battery charger, set it up and put a low charge on it for 20 mins to a half hour. then try to start it again. If the battery is in good shape, check the cables to starter and ground. If that doesn't help you might have to remove the starter and have it tested.

Battery wont take charge

Check the battery for a dead cell. Even no maintenance batteries have caps that can be removed. Once removed, use a battery tester (<$5 most auto parts stores) to determine if there's a dead cell. If no dead cells exist, then the charging system aka alternator/regulator have issues. Before doing further analysis, ensure that the connections are tight and free of corrosion.
