Olympus Fe-310, only used a few times, kept protected, one yr later with new batteries it powers on, opens and extends lenz then the LCD shuts off, lenz stays out and orange indicator light stays lit. Wont power down, does nothing. What are these things programed to stop working after the 1 yr warranty? Always handled like a newborn chick and kept in an environmentally stable place. wtf

Short answer - yes.
Manufacturers have become very good at making products that are reliable for exactly 1 year.
Usually it's small components that have a deffinate shelf life.
I would first check that you are using the correct battery for it. Even if it looks like it takes standard AA's - they often will only work for original spec rechargable blocks.
If this does not solve it - write a letter to Olympus saying how dissapointed you are with their product.
They may offer you a good deal on a repair hopefully.
Unfortunately Sony and HP are even worse - HP and lexmark printers now stop working after a period of time - telling you to buy more ink - even though you still have plenty.
