IF YOU HAVE A BURNING SMELL THAT SELLS LIKE RUBBER THEN ITS TIME REPLACE THE BELT,MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN THE MOTOR SHAFT OF THE OLD RUBBER OTHERWISE THE NEW BELT WON'T LAST VERY LONG.YOU CAN USE A SMALL PIECE OF EMERY CLOTH TO CLEAN IT DOWN TO THE POLSHED FINISH

Smells like burning rubber when running

Vacuum belts lose elasticity and will slip. It may spin the brush roll ok when you look at it but be so loose that when. Vacuuming carpets the belt will stop turning. The motor shaft is still spinning and will melt the rubber belt causing a burned rubber smell. Belts on almost All vacuums need. To be changed at least twice per year.

My vacuum has a burning smell coming from it. What should i do?

It's most likely the belt in the power head is worn or loose. Friction against the roller and/or motor shaft will result in the smell. Replace it and you should be fine.
Check the roller brush for theads, hair, etc., and clean if necessary.
Depending on the age of the vacuum, the motor could be going bad. If debris has gotten into the motor, this happens. Also, if the brushes in the motor have worn done sufficiently, the holders grind against the armature, creating the smell. The motor needs replaced.
You don't mention the model, but instructions for replacing the belt may be in the manual.

Why is my making a really loud noise and smells burnt when I turn it on. I have a new belt on it.

Improper installation of belt can result in a loose or off center belt which will flap and make lots of noise. It can also result in the burning rubber smell. The belt is probably ruined now, and will need to be replaced again. Make sure new ones are installed and centered correctly.

When vacuuming, it smells like burnt rubber

The little belt that drives the brushes has become loose or has failed. Since they are made of rubber they can and do stink when you are trying to operate the vacuum.

First of all turn the vacuum over and see if the brushes are turning. If not replace the belt. Most stores that service vacuums will have the part, you will need your model number to get the proper belt.
It has to be the exact replacement part.

The brush roller stops turning and I can smell the belt burning, then it will catch and start working normal. I looked under the plate to check the belts and they looked okay and no hang ups of string or...

better to replace both belts the smaller one is stretched out thats whyits slipping ,be sure to clean the old rubber off the motor shaft before replacing the belts.it will cause the new belts to run unevevly and go bad before their time

The belt looses it tensile strength (tightness) over time. But it's the part about funny sounds and shutting down that concerns me. If it smells like a tire fire then it's the belt if it smells like plastic and burned hair then the motor has a bad field or armature. Probably one of the carbon brushes got hung up and burned a segment in the armature.

Rubber smell, Hoover

Well it sound like you do need a new belt because of how the smell is you might want to stop using it because the smell comes from the burning and over heated belt my solution would be to get a new belt and that should fix it if you need anything else you know whre to find me.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
In answer to your question, the reason it smells like burning rubber is because the belt is too loose and it is burning the inside of the belt because it is to loose, the average belt change for a Kirby vacuum is every 4 to 6 months, the tighter the belt the better the cleaning and always use the genuine Kirby belts because they are designed to work with the Kirby, there are replacement belts that will work and are less but they are made to the correct size but Kirby vacuums always s work better with genuine parts. If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

My vacuum kenmore canister smells

My guess would be a slightly loose belt - tight enough to spin the roller on a hard floor, but loose enough to slip (then get hot and stink) when the roller is having to work against the pile of a carpet. Worth buying and fitting a new belt without pausing to investigate further, simply because they're so cheap and you'll have to replace it sooner or later anyway. A.
