Yes, I suggest you use the Restoration Disks. As the restoration proceeds, you will be asked if you wish to do a Repair, or a Full Install.
Choose Repair.

I'm a little confused by your additional comments, please bear with me.

Do I understand that in the main menu you are offered three options?
    1.Delete All Files
    2.Auto Install of Windows

    I await your reply

I now see what you're referring to. I downloaded documents dealing with the Gateway M305 Series of notebooks.
(User Guide, Checking Out Your Gateway M305, Specifications, Components, and other documentation)

From Gateway's information, it does indeed seem as though your personal information will be wiped out.
1.Insert the red Drivers and Applications CD
    2.Restart your notebook
    3.Select: Boot from CDROM
    4.Select Language
    5.Delete All Files
6.Continue deleting all files and restart
7.When prompted press any key to continue
    8.Select: Boot from CDROM
    9.Select a language option
10.Select: Automated Installation of Windows (XP or 2000)
11.When prompted remove the red CD, and insert the blue Operating System CD.

That doesn't indicate repairing necessary files to me, it indicates restoring the notebook back to day 1 from the factory!

The following is based upon what I would do. It may not be what you wish to take on. You may wish to have a competent computer repair shop take on the task instead.

I would remove the harddrive, buy an external enclosure, and attach the external enclosure to another computer. Desktop or laptop. Then I would download all of my personal documents to a CD disk, or disks. (Burn, or copy to CD)

Afterwords I would reinstall the harddrive back into the notebook, and use the Recovery disks. Bring the notebook back to an operating status, and have my needed information saved.

Your notebook uses a 2.5 IDE harddrive. 2.5 is 2 and a half inches. This is the width of the harddrive. (3.5 for a desktop computer)
IDE is the style of harddrive. (IDE is also referred to as PATA)
An external enclosure is relatively cheap. Average cost is around $20 US. The enclosure has a USB cable attached to it, and you simply plug the USB cable into any computer.

Here is an example of a External Enclosure for a 2.5 IDE harddrive,

if you want to reinstall OS:
Insert the disk, it should automatically open the install.exe thing and you'll need to follow the instructions.

if you want to restore the computer to factory settings and reinstall OS:
turn off your PC
keep pressing the key for boot menu it's F8 or F12 or F11 depending on the PC's manufacturer.
Then there will be either a boot menu or a "Do you want to do a system restore":
a) system restore, keep pressing the key and it will load. Then follow the instructions
b) if it's boot menu, insert the disk, and then select the option which says to load from the CD/DVD. Then follow the instructions.

I have a lsass.exe error message and netbook keeps restarting, it wont boot in safe mode or anything and I have no cd drive either. Please help...

lsass.exe is certainly a virus issue, the actual process isnt really a virus but viruses hijack the process for their own nefarious reasons.
You only have two options really, 1) use a boot disk antivirus (search google for avg boot cd) and then use the restore disks to try and repair the system file (copy the one off the restore disk to replace the corrupt one on your system)
2) Use your restore disks / another installation disk to build a new operating system.

Just remember if you have data on the drive to take it out to get your data off first. Personally I'd take your drive out and put a new drive in, then build a new OS on the new drive, nice clean and fast, then put your data onto it.

A Disk read error occured PressCtrl+Alt+Del to restart.

If you are getting a disk read error, you will need to use a program like spinrite to fix it or you will need to replace the hard drive.
This is one error you don't want to see. It means your hard drive is failing.
You will not be able to do a system restore as long as you get this error.

Dell b130 internal system restoration failed

Incase you don't have any thing important on the computer try a factory restore. This will wipe out everthing and make the cmputer like new. To start it power off the laptop. Power it on and hold down ctrl and tap f11 severl times at the Dell logo screen. Try this q couple of times as it may not work the first time. If this does nothing you'll need the os cd (xp cd) tO repair or reinstall windows.

My 0xc000000c "Restore Failed" prompt seemed to be the result of disk surface damage on the restore disk. After burning the restore disk to a new disk, the restore proceeded normally. Try making a copy of the original restore disk to a known good blank disk.

Brand new v5535 notebook won't set up keeps coming up with error

Try pressing the F8 key while booting, at the boot option page select the last known good configuration and boot from there. If this does not work, press the F8 key while booting and choose boot in safe mode, then go to start/programs/accessorys/system tools/system restore. choose a date that the computer was acting normal and restore to this date. If this does not work do a reinstall with the system restore disk and drive/application restore disk. BPCS
