No Power on machine previously running. power went out and when power came back on machine will not boot up

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Ok. Unplug the machine for 15 mins. Plug it back in for 1 hour, and make sure your surge supressor is on. ( the tiny light is blinking ) Hit the power button. What happens? 1. Nothing: dead power supply or CPU ( In rare instances, it can be a dead Motherboard battery ) A. Smell the outlet fan on the Powersupply. Does it smell like burning rubber or worse? 2. The fan wizzes for a few seconds, then stops: Dead Powersupply. 3. The fan wizzes continiously, and still no boot. Dead Powersupply 4. Everything works. ( the Powersupply did get a shock jolt and will be suspect from now on.. ).

Check to make sure the circuit is on, plug a light into the outlet on the wall. then plug it into the surge protector, if you have one, if not, you may have burnt out the PC. Look on the back of the machine, there may be a small black thingy with white writing on it, for a fuse. Unscrew it, and check the fuse, if it is bad, get a new one.

Laptop turns off after a second

One second after your press the power button or one second after it gets the the windows desktop? When you press the power button do you hear the fan running, see any lights, hear the disk drive spinning, hear the cd rom drive click once and see the light for about 2 seconds on the cd rom drawer? If all the previous is seen or heard it means you are getting power and it's trying to boot. If you see or hear nothing at all it means your power cord is probably bad. On most laptops once you plug the power cord in you should see a light someone on the laptop, if not the cord is bad. Also on some AC Adapter Power Cords they will have an indicator light on the adapter that lets you know it's functioning. It really sounds like your power cord went bad and the last time you were able to operate you were operating off your battery which is completely drained since the cord could not recharge it. One last thing to try is remove the power cord and battery from the laptop. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug on the power cord back it and press the power button. if it boots you can put the battery back in.

Hi, I recently purchased a Samsung Q330 with windows 7 home edition installed. About a week after owning it I was prompted to download the windows updates of which there were about 49. After these were...

The update messed up the OS. I would go into Safe Mode (tap the F8 key while the system is booting up) and then uninstall all the updates or go back to the previous System Restore point (from Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore).

Computer will not boot up after power outage while running update

OK well if you can boot into Safe Mode, press F8 at bootup, then do so, and try a System Restore, back to a time before you had a problem Otherwise you will have to re-install your Operating System.

Boot up

Hi there.
Try clearing the cmos
d015d7b.jpg<<<<< you will see in the picture a plastic jumper (in this case coloured green), move it to the other position and hit the on/off button, then put it back in its original position and power up the machine again. Hopefully the issue will have been sorted. If there is no jumper remove the battery for an hour and make sure the power cord is removed from the back before you clear the cmos

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Monitor shuts off during boot. Let the machine boot full up, hit the power button, the monitor flashes windows for a split second, and goes back to power saving mode

Hey there Celius,

Chances are the 'Refresh Rate' somehow got set too high for the monitor. On flatscreens , the result is a black screen.

If you have an old monitor (crt type) hook that up temporarily and reboot.
  • Right Click the Desktop
  • Click Properties
  • Click Settings
  • Click Advanced
  • Click Monitor
  • Lower the refresh rate or set at optimal
  • Check the box 'Hide refresh rates this monitor can't display'
Shutdown, Switch back monitors and try it now.

Good luck

Random Power Loss on Dell XPS 600

Possible reasons for random rebooting:
1. CPU Fan/Heatsink is loose Restarting due to Overheat Prevention. Im guessing the processor is LGA775. if u can open up the case and see if any of the four plugs and sockets has come loose, then that might be it.

2. Not Enougth power from PSU (Power Supply Unit). if it was built for gaming im explecting a PSU of at least 750Watts

3. Harware malfunction. When booting up, any error beeps?

4. Software error. Before logging in a user account, leave the computer on for a while if nothing happens then most likely be OS problem.

Your best bet is to reinstall Windows
