Question about Iomega (33090) 250 GB Hard Drive

My computer will not read the iomega external hard drive. I have tried different usb ports, i have restarted my computer, and i have checked to make sure all connections are connected properly but it is still not being picked up by my computer. help pls

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port
6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

My iomega is not showing up on my laptop?


The best USB ports to use are usually the rear ones.sometimes the bios keeps account of the number of connections and then refuses to recognise.if this is the case then you could try going into bios and switching off USB restart and switch it back on to clear the count. Or yes a different USB cable as these can sometimes create read errors.

My iomega hard drive doesnt appear under my computer, it appears in dev. mgr but cannot assign a letter. Windows makes a sound to recognise its there, its says usb recognised and ready to go. just cant...


Iomega portable hard drives connect to your computer through a USB port. When you connect the Iomega hard drive to your computer, it should pop up as an icon in your My Computer folder. If you can't find the icon in your My Computer folder then you probably need to update the driver for the device. Updating this driver is not very hard and can be done automatically from the Windows Device Manager.

Plug your Iomega hard drive into one of your computer's USB port. Click the "Start" button and go to the "Run" field. Type "Devmgmt.msc" into the Run box and press the "Enter" key. Go down to the bottom of the device manager to the "Universal Serial Bus Controller." Click on the little + (plus) sign to expand it. Look for an entry with a yellow exclamation point and click on it. Click the "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" button and then click the "Next" button. Click the "Finish" button when the installation has finished. Go to the "My Computer" folder from your "Start" menu and locate the Iomega hard drive icon. Double click the icon to gain access to the external hard drive. Hope it helps.

My computer refuses to recognize the external hard drive what do i do

What type of OS are you running ( Windows # )

What type of motherboard

Here is what i would do to start off with,


STEP ONE - Check all connections
  1. Unplug the USB data cable from the drive and the computer.
  2. Check the ends of the USB data cable to ensure that they are not damaged.
  3. Reconnect the USB data cable to the drive and the computer. Check the connections to ensure that they are secure.

    Note: If you have a Portable Hard Drive with a 2-line USB/power cable, connect both the data line and the supplemental power line (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) to USB ports on the computer. If the status light on the drive glows steadily, the drive is receiving power. Go to step E.
  4. If you are connecting an Iomega Desktop Hard Drive, check the power supply connections to the drive and power outlet to ensure that they are secure.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Double click the Computer or My Computer to see if the Iomega Hard Drive is detected.

    If the Iomega Hard Drive is detected, you can now use the drive.

    If the Iomega Hard Drive is not detected, please try another USB cable and/or power supply (if available). If the Iomega Hard Drive is still not detected, continue with the next step.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Terabyte iomega hard drive, the two lights are flashing red, fan not operating, no access via My Computer.

External iomega usb drive fails to mount. was working fine. moved my computer station, detaching everything and just got everything set up. Tried: different usb cord, different usb port, different...


It could be that for some reason it is trying to grab a drive letter that is already being used. As administrator, right click on "My Computer" > Manage > Disk Management. Change the drive letter if needed by choosing "Edit". (You should first check your iomega by connecting it to another computer to make sure it is working properly.) Good luck.

Vista stops recognizing external hard drive


This doesn't sound like an OS issue. This appears to be more an issue of the connection to the hard drive. The USB cable likely isn't the culprit, nor the laptop USB inputs. If the drive was ever dropped or the cable gets removed and reattached often to the actual enclosure, you might be looking at a bad port on the enclosure. This isnt a lost cause. You can always buy a hard drive enclosure from newegg and move the drive from the IOMEGA to the new enclosure. You can get a new enclosure for $15. Just because the USB port is bad, it doesnt mean the data is gone and the hard drive cant be used.
