Question about Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P Front Load Washer

1 Answer

I've had my Whirlpool Duet for a couple of years now and in the past 6 months or so, I have noticed when I open it after it sits empty it smells sour like water isn't pumping completely out. I have checked all around the gasket area for lodged socks as that is quite a catch all but there is nothing in there. Our water is good and I use the right detergent in there. Is it not draining properly?

The first thing to do is to CHECK IN AND AROUND THE RUBBER DOOR BOOT (called a bellow) for small articles of clothing (like socks and underwear) that may have gotten lodged in behind the rubber. Pull the rubber back where it meets the wash tub and look behind it. It is common for small items to get stuck here, become forgotten and start to mildew. You should check this area after each wash and clean it periodically to get rid of the formation of soap scum, mold, and mildew. HINT: When you get ready to wash a load of towels, take a dirty towel and clean the door boot thoroughly (including the areas behind the rubber). Immediately place the towel in the wash and run it on a sanitary cycle. This way you eliminate the need for cleaning rags.

PERIODICALLY RUN THE WASHER ON A CLEANING CYCLE. Place the washer on the hottest setting you have (usually a Sanitary cycle) with nothing but bleach in the wash tub. Some newer models actually have a "Clean Cycle" available now just for this purpose. This helps keep the wash tub, drain lines and pump sanitized.

CHECK AND CLEAN THE DRAIN PUMP FILTER. Accumulations of debris in the drain pump filter can also cause odors. HINT: If you own a shop vac, pull the drain hose from the standpipe at the wall and pull a vacuum on the line. This will drain any residual water left in the tub, pump and drain lines BEFORE you remove the drain pump cover. This will prevent a messy clean up later.

LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN IF POSSIBLE. When not in use, leave the door open to allow the tub to air out and to keep mold and mildew from forming on the door bellow. I know this may not be desirable in some households with small children. If too much mildew forms on the rubber and it cannot be removed, replacement of the bellow may be required.

NOTE: This problem is common with front loader style washing machines. The doors on these machines have an air tight/water tight seal that is great for sealing the washer during the wash cycle, but can be terrible for collecting small garments and for not allowing the tub to properly air out when not in use. Following these simple preventive measures can go a long way towards preventing harmful mold and mildew, and towards extending the life of the door bellow and pump.

Clothes smell sour

I have this problem with my Siemens machine, it is due to mainly running low temp washes and bateria building up in the hoses etc. (more prevalent if the machine is connected directly to the sink and not on a stand pipe). I run a 90 degree cycle every 4 weeks with the machine empty except for two capfuls of baby sterilisng fluid (approx half a mug) I buy stores own as it is cheaper than miltons. The first time I did mine I ran the cycle twice to be sure it was cleared out. My machine is six years old and the first smelly signs were when it was about a year old, I run the maintenance wash religiously ever 4 weeks and run a machine descaler such as oust thru every 4-6 months. Hope this helps. Roni. (ps don't be tempted to use bleach as it foams up and can cause more problems!!)

I have a Whirlpool Duet front loading washer with a smelly trap.

It is normal to have water in the drain lines and drain trap even when the unit is not in use. There's usually about a gallon of residual water in the lower portion of the wash tub, drain line and pump. If you are experiencing sour odors from the washer, the following link can give you some pointers on things to try to help keep the smell from coming back:

Read through the link provided and let me know if you still have problems. I personally own a front loader and have followed this regiment for 9 years now with no odor or mildew problems. I hope this helps you as well.

I have had my duet for about 5 years. I thought

The problem is commonly caused by debris building up in the drain pump. Over time it sours and begins to smell. The following link explains how to access the drain pump and clean it:

There are several other factors that can also contribute to front loader odors. The following link explains a things to look for and try:

Read through the information provided and let me know if you have any questions. I hope you find this information helpful.

Mold buildup around interior of drum - odor and spots on clothes

Posted in 2008

I've had my Duet for 5+ years with no odor until the past 6 months or so. Even changing to a more fragrant fabric softener didn't make my cleaned clothes and towels smell clean. I noticed it especially when I would grab my towel after a shower. For a while I thought someone else was using my towel and stinking it up. Then I realized it was the whole laundry. ( I was having my laundry done for me... otherwise I probably would have realized it sooner. After reading all the suggestions for resolving this sour odor I thought I would try some of the ideas suggested that I hadn't already tried. Then it dawned on me that about 6 months ago I switched from a powdered detergent (SA8, an Amwy/Quixtar product) and dryer sheets to a well-known well-ranked Liquid Detergent and a fabric softener. I only switched because my son like the way his friend's laundry smelled when he borrowed a shirt. I was using fragrance-free products. So I had fragrant laundry for a short time. Then it started to smell sour. Maybe this change was the cause. So I've ordered another box of the powdered detergent and I'm going back to dryer sheets.

In the meantime I'm still doing stinky laundry. Same day I order new detergent, I decide to wash a load with some very stained baseball pants. I sometimes use a small amount (1/4 cup) of Oxy Clean, with my detergent but I decided to go full-strength which on the box said 1 cup. Hot water wash. Put it in with the clothes. Same liquid detergent, no fabric softener. When I took out the laundry, for the first time in months, it smelled clean. No stale, sour odor. Next load, nice smell again. Decided to do one more load with 1 cup Oxy Clean again. I'm still going to switch back to the SA8 (which is by the way highly ranked by Consumer's reports) and dryer sheets.

By the way, a few weeks ago I had to disconect the water discharge line behind the washer. The sludgy goo that was in the line and machine where the two connected was disgusting, but didn't smell bad. I cleaned it out with my finger. Ugh!

So it's now several months later. My clothes smell clean, as does my washer. I switched to powder and only occasionally use liquid softener. Still occasionally use the full dose of Oxyclean with a hot load. I occasionally wipe down the door and seal... especially the bottom of the window, and always leave the door ajar when not in use.

Front load washer smells!

Did you check for small wet items just inside the door? Push in on the soft gray rubber area right down in front and made certain you don't have something soured down in that area.

Sour smell coming from inside whirlpool duet front loader

At the risk of being rude... it's not your washer that is causing the problem it's your washing habits. Jeff is "right on the money" when he stated water temperature is important. It's fine to use mainly cold water but it makes preventive maintenance very important. A hot soak or wash as your last cycle on was day will help dissolve and flush out residue. Just as important is the amount of detergent used and use of fabric softener. To remove odor from your washer and laundry the "splash area" just above the normal waterline must be cleaned. This is invariably the area of heaviest buildup of odor-causing residue. To clean the splash area add 1 or 2 caps of smelly washer cleaner to a full load of laundry and wash in a hot setting. The added bulk of the laundry will raise the water level to include the splash area. Intermittently pause to soak for more extreme cases.

Sour Smell in clothes

While cruising around the net searching for some phone batteries, I came across an ad for a product called "Smelly Wash". I was intrigued by the name, and, since I have been trying to help out a friend who has issues with her front loader and water that is very high in iron and other fragrant minerals, I thought I'd take a look.

32 years ago I bought our first washer and the plumber who came to install it recommended SA8. He told me he had taken apart many machines and most were gummed up with the fillers that are in many detergents. Liquid detergents were not as prevalent at the time.

I friend of a friend helped me locate an Amway distributor and I bought SA8 from her for a few years until we moved. In our next home, I found another distributor and continued using the SA8.

Meanwhile, we added three more daughters to the family and I never once used anything but SA8.

Year's later, an older friend's husband (quite ill with emphysema and with severe contact dermatitis, countless allergies, etc.) called me to borrow some SA8 because that was all she could use for his clothing, sheets, towels...

With each move, we have left washing machines behind because sometimes they were "selling" points. My current machine is a 6 or 7 year old Whirlpool frontloader and I have never had "smelly" issues.

I care for my cloth-diaper using granddaughter and have absolutely no problems washing her diapers. I use one small scoop of SA8, and on occasion, a booster if the load is large. That's it. Nothing smells...EVER...even if I accidentally leave a washed load overnight. Every load smells CLEAN, but with NO scent.

I will go to my grave using SA8. I have to give my clothes away because they just don't get beat-up by the machine nor the detergent.
