Question about Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a neptune washer that makes a buzzing type noise when I hit the start button? from motor area. The belt and pulley into the unit turns freely. I did get it to start and the barrel did rotate then stop and the buzzing noise started.

The noise actually sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the washer by the motor, not the control panel.

  • kimsdaffy Oct 01, 2009

The noise and a vibrating motion is coming from the black and powder blue box (it almost looks like some kind of conduction coil) at the bottom of the washer that is connected to the drainage pump. Is this the relay you are talking about?

The buzzing noise is probably an electrical relay that controls the motor. They have a spring assembly on an arm. When you energize it it creates a magnetic field and pull the arm down into contact and starts the current flow to the motor. If it's buzzing, the relay is probably bad and need replaced.

The relay isn't necessarily by the control panel it's probably by the motor.

  • obwhon Oct 02, 2009

That's what a relay looks like is a coil of wire with a thin strip of metal on top somewhere. When you energize the coil it pull the strip of metal down and it makes contact with a terminal that completes the circuit. If this is hooked to the pump them I'm a little fuzzy on what it goes to. I thought it would start the main motor. I need a schematic.

I'm guessing that your belt my have been misaligned, which means, no problem!

But, I recently had a machine that had a motor that would not turn, only hummed. I vacuumed the lint, then blew the lint out of the motor with a compressor, and vacuumed again. It still needed a push start to get the motor turning, but it starts on its own, now. So, if you have a lot of lint buildup, it can eventually stop the motor

remove the belt from the motor pulley and make sure motor spins freely, check the 3 windings with an ohmmeter for appx 8-11 ohms each, then check all connections everywhere by removing and reinserting them, then try to run the diagnostics from the tech sheet inside the washer,if all this fails then replace the M.C.U. motor control unit

If you push the start button and you here a buzzing sound, This sounds like the motor is bad.

Somthing you can try and this might not work. but open the dryer door and turn the drum a littel bit then close the door and try to start it. If it starts running again then you have hit a bad spot on the motor.

If it just still just makes the buzzing noise then the motor is most likley bad.

During the final spin, it is making a loud sound, is there a bearing that could be going?

The Maytag Neptune washer has 2 bearings seperated by a spacer pressed into the rear of the outer tub. The shaft from the inner basket support goes through a seal ten the 2 bearings where it attaches to the drive pulley. A small leak in the seal will cause the bearings to fail. The regular repair is expensive for both parts and labor as the outer tub has to be replaced. You can check around your area for a service company equipped to replace only the bearings rather than the tub.

Something is keeping the motor from starting properly. Does it start more consistently with an empty drum? The burning could be the belt slipping because the drum cannot turn. May need a belt and drum support pulleys or could be more serious. Complete diagnosis requires hands on.

Maytag neptune washer sounds like tornado during spin cycle

Hi!

The reason of this noise is from loose lower front weight mounting bolts or a loose bolt securing
the driven pulley. Check the motor adjustment bolt for tightness. The noise could be from a loose wire harness, plastic purse-lock wire harness retainer on upper hose hitting the top cover or a plastic injection mold standoff on the outer tub bearing housing may possibly be interfering with the driven pulley. Also, check the drive belt for a weak spot on the belt. Ussually felt on the backside of the belt as a "flat" spot. Check the belt for a weak seam and replace it.

Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW screaching noise, belt problem, pulley broke

My Maytag Performa was making the loud squealing noise. I changed out the water pump/bearing, took care of the problem.
Putting a new belt on just help burn up the bearing (they needed replacing) and probably ruined the new belt. Probably seized the water pump bearing and the belt jumped and broke the motor pully. A washing machine motor is very strong, when that h20 pump bearing seized (or possibly some bearings jamed up) the motor kept on turning that belt and the plastic pully gave in. You'll need to replace that also. If the h20 pumb bearing is turning freely, likely the bearings jammed up but or now loose. That bearing should be tight, no slack or play in it. You can probably wobble the pully on it all around while turning it. The slightest slack is too much.
