I have cracking on my 4th glass cooktop in 2 years. The last one is only 4 months old. Help find the answer to why I even tore off the entire top from the island and had everything absolute level.Authorized servige installed the top. Absolute level. 4 months and it cracked again in the same place. service man says the double ring element checked out o.k. but there is something wrong Help
The cooktop box has a metal flange. Make sure the cooktop when dropped into the countertop is resting on ther metal flange and not the glass edge by itself. If it rests on the glass alone the weight will cause the glass to crack at some point in time.
I have the same problem with the Kenmore Elite cooktop 4428. The unit has cracked twice in the same spot while cooking, in a little over a year. I've also received 5 other defective units when Sears tried to replace the cracked units. I requested they replace with a gas unit but Sears refused. They just want to keep replacing the glass top($800) instead of fixing the issue!

actually that's a valid concern as i am too. I do know some of these have breather holes but that's a crack your talking about not a seem or a hole.. I would not use it i would get it replaced or call the manufacturer to understand if its part of their design.. very unlikely.
whirlpool offers a five year warranty on glass cooktops for thermal damage only not for customer mishaps so call a certified repair place and they can get you a new cooktop if you tell them that it is thermal cracking
A small crack, turns into a big crack, Short of ordering a new piece of glass, there is no "fix" sorry. YOu can continue to use it, but eventually it will run across the cook top, and then shatter the glass... Better be safe than sorry.

sorry to say no , if you try to peal it off or scrape ot off you will crack the cooktop . this keeps happening i have seen it at around 4 times for some reason revere ware melts . there should be a warning in the manual ( i know ge does have the warning about copper bottoms ) . replaceing the cooktop or the whole stove is the only "true" answer .... sorry .....Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . A 1 or 2 may knock me down into the unpaid ranks. Thanks Cactus Bob
Hello mkerfoot, I know the feeling. The same complaint I hear about on SS. I just sink type dish washing detergent to clean the grease off and a paper towel with vinegar water solution. For heavy staining on the burner area, apply the dw detergent full strenght and let it sit to loosen the debre. Hope this helps.
The top can not be repaired. The glass must be replaced . DO NOT USE IT CRACKED!!!!!!!!!!!! This is very dangerous as it can explode from the temperature. Also this is a severe electrical danger as glass top units have exposed elements underneath. Any liquid at all can short it out and cause a fire. I don't know if it is worth repairing. I don't have the exact price for your cooktop but last one I priced was between $350 - $500.
