Question about Refrigerators
My GE refrigerator no longer responds to the water/ice lever. It's as if the control lock is locked, but it is not. Filter replacement does nothing, and neither does turning off/on the ice machine.
I had the same problem as do thousands of people with this same fridge. The mother board is bad and needs to be replaced. It is easy to do yourself and the part costs less than a service call.: Unplug the cord from the wall, remove the panel from the back of the fridge (it is about the size of a small shoe box lid) You will see the mother board (ice, water, light, and compressor control unit). It is an electronic circuit board. There are about 5 or so plugs going into the board. Remove the plugs and the retaining screws and search Ebay for the part#WR55x10552 GE Power Control Board. I found one for $74, popped it in, and everything works better than new!

Visit this website: http://applianceguru.com/forum1/13243.html I am having the same problem. A recall was issued and whether the fridge is in warranty or not, it will be fixed free of charge. This website lists all model numbers that are included in the recall and phone number to contact.

There's a recall on this issue - do some more googling and you will find it.

Same thing happened to me in the same week as you. I bought mine in July 2006 so it is just 6 months over the 1 year. it is still within the 5year but they said this part is not covered within that warranty. They said I would have to pay for a technician visit and the part. I already know that it is the controller board which I don't understand why that is not covered. that is the brain to the fridgerator. I know it isn't the the two parts that aren't responding (ice crank coil and magnet lever) cause I took those out and tested them and they work fine. Murphys law at work here.

Are you actually getting water into the fridge? Has the line frosted? You may have to defrost and make sure your freezer is not set lower than 5 degrees F.
