I just installed a reversing valve in backwards. It was an honest mistake. All brands except ruud and rheem energize the valve in the cool mode. If u make the same mistake I did its an easy fix. First u can't just change the the orange wire from o to b. keep the orange wire on o. U need to install a 24 volt relay in the heat pump. Wire the coil with a common and remove the hot wire from the reversing valve and land it on the coil of the relay. Next wire 24volt hot to oneside of contacts on relay and run a wire from normally closed terminal on relay to reversing valve. What this does is reverse the contacts. So ur heat pump will work normal and also be able to go threw a defrost cycle as well. Hope this helps.

You should be able to move the reversing valve wire from O terminal, (the changeover relay), on the thermostat to B terminal. I deal mostly with York
which O on the t'stat is normally open and B is normally closed.

I have a goodman heat pump and all winter it worked fine, now i set it for ac and stil blowing hot air

The reversing valve may be stuck or it has a burnt solenoid coil. Also, check the defrost relay accross the contacts with an ohmmeter and see if it's bad. Goodman heat pumps also trip on high pressure. There's a resettable switch on some units with a red button. However, I think the problem is in the defrost circuit or reversing valve. If your electric heat is on, change the board.

Goodman heats but defrosts turns on before desired temp.

Yes. The defrost cycle of a heat pump is actually turning on your airconditioning to heat up the condenser to thaw it out. During this cycle your electric strip heaters "should" be adequate enough to compensate for the a/c being on. At about 30 - 34 degrees outdoor temp there is not enough heat in the air to to adequately heat your home with the heat pump only. Some technitions will use an outdoor thermostat to turn off the heat pump when it is under 34 degrees outside. If you are to cold when its under 34 degrees intall more electric strip heaters.. But if you do this your electric bill may go up significantly.
Welcome to the wonderful world of electric heat pumps (lol).
Good luck.

Call the person who installed it, there could be another control on this that will energize the defrost, or call Goodman tech support they should give you the sequence of operation

I just had a new unit installed and I am surfing for troubleshooting tips too. My unit is doing the same... cools well heat sucks. my problem has been isolated down to the reversing valve... It is constantly energised which means it is constantly in a/c mode even when kicking on the heat strips... We disconnected a line at the thermostat and it is working well as a heater now. You may want to check yours to see if it is actually kicking over into to heat mode... -rob

Not heating

Yes, the reversing valve has a separate coil. some energize on cool mode, some on heat mode. Has the thermostat been replaced? I find this a common mistake.
