  • The refrigerator/freezer is just out of warranty. I am a licensed refrigeration tech in nc, and do know about this, but without a schematic it is much more difficult to get to the root. I will have to access the evap. in order to ohm the heater and limit. I know that if they are ok then the problem may lie in the board. I also know that some have a timer with 4 wires, this one don't. It is either controlled by the # of times the door is opened or may accumulate total time then initiate a defrost. There is not a schematic on the back if the fridge or under the control board cover. Any assistance you could give me in obtaining a schematic for a GE M# GSS201EPJWW S# FH215205 would be greatly appreciated

  • Kinda figured that I would have to pull it apart. I have access to wholesale repair parts, and have located the replacement board, heater, and limit. Now is the time to figure out whitch one is bad.

This is a common problem with this model refrigerator. I had the same problem and checking with GE, they are aware about this problem and tell me they have a replacement part for this refrigerator. The problem is most likely the defrost heater element. The element size is completely different but is made to fit.

Dcompton, On the board, blue 3 pronged harness, left side lower. See if you have voltage from line (marked on board) to J7-9, orange wire.(next harness to the right) If you do, jump line to def on the 3 pronged harness. This will send 120V to your heaters. See if the heaters come on. If they do, you know that the board is not sending the unit into defrost. If they don't, the heater is the problem. First check your evaporator thermistor, should be approx. 36k ohms at 5 degrees. If that scopes ok, Then your problem is the board. The defrost thermostat is normally closed. It's there as a back-up in case the evap thermistor fails to terminate the defrost. It will open then at 140 degrees. Catriver.

Freeze up is generally caused by one of four reasons:

  1. bad door gaskets
  2. doors kept open too long
  3. low gas
  4. blocked vents
It can also be caused by bad defrost timer or heater. Generally, schematics are located on the rear of the unit.

Wish I could help further with a schematic. Sounds like you're going to have to skull this one out. That said, I've found with many GEs that if you pull the back panel in the freezer you can get a better idea of what's going on. These units use some kind of aluminum chaff on the evap tubes which hold ice like crazy. If you do get in, you'll also have easy access to the defrost heater. The connectors are crappy on them...cycle them. GEs also have very thin tubing and leak freon like crazy. The good news: if you start them up you can get a really tight charge because the whole evap line is exposed.

How do I repair a ge side by side that is not cooling/freezing

If this is a profile or Artica. it could have a bad sensor in the freezer. the one that is clipped to the freezer coils and can cause the electronic control board to not defrost. If the refrigerator does not have an electronic control then it is more than likely a defrost component has failed. Remove the back panel, defrost the ice and check the heater coil for continuity. if it is good then the defrost thermostat is most likely bad. If it is good then the defrost timer or control is probably the culprit.

The coils behind the freezer compartment freeze up about once a month. After I take it apart and defrost with a hair dryer it runs fine... for about a month. Is this the main control board?

it can be,but before you replace that $100.00+ board, check the defrost heating element for continuity and also the defrost thermostat(both on the evaporator coil) as these go bad too and are much cheaper than the board

Freezer coils freeze up then frig warms

this is more than likely a defrost sensor or timer that is not allowing the fridge to go into a defrost could also have a problem with the thermastat the allows the fridge to run for longer periods of time.

Ge frig does not freeze on freezer side

How to check everything
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Freezer is freezing OK. Refrigerator is not

I can tell you that if your model number PSS26MSRSS does not have a defrost timer. The most likely reason for freezing over of the evaporator coils will cause your fresh food section to appear warmer first are the defrost heater and thermostat. Defrost thermostat part number 332b542.jpg WR50X10068

GE side by side refrigerator TFX22ZRA control board

The adaptive defrost on your model is controled by the motherboard, but I don't think that is your problem. If the freezer is too cold and the fresh foods is too warm, check the air dampener. It is a small duct door in the very back top left of the fresh foods section.

Defrost issues

If it's around 2-3 years old, my first guess would be the heater is bad. The GSS models have problems with the heater almost always about that time.

Test the heater and the defrost thermostat for continuity with a multimeter. Whichever one doesn't get continuity is bad and should be replaced. If they are both good and the evaporator fan is running like it should, it will be the main control board located on the back of the unit.
