Should rear fan run all of the time or only when needed?

Depending on if the fan is plugged into only a molex (power) connector, or into a fan port on your motherboard, it could go either way. If it's plugged into the motherboard, there's a good chance the motherboard is controlling it thermostatically. A case fan venting out is always a great way to help improve airflow and keep components cool.

Hope this helps!

No lights no power no fan

Please check if all the power cables are plugged in properly and check whether the fan in power supply is running after powering the system.
1. If the power supply fan is running then remove the memory( RAM) installed in your system, try changing the slot and if the issue still persists then the issue is with the motherboard and then you would need to check with the local technician.

2. In case the power supply fan is not running then removed the main power connector (the biggest one coming out from the power supply and going into the mother board) from the mother board. Check if the power supply fan runs or not, if it does then perform 'step 1' and if it doesn't then replace the power supply.

Power supply is good, fans running - no display on

make sure to check the video cable (DVI,VGA,HDMI) if properly connected

if youre using an independent video card and your motherboard has a builtin try to use the integrated to check if the video card is faulty

if you dont have a video card and using the integrated the motherboard might be faulty

Had my motherboard changed by local repair shop. Both fans are now running constantly & it is deafening, also power light no longer comes on and was told it was "no big deal". Have 2 like computers,...

Ok so what fans? the case fans? the cpu fan? The power supply fan should always run. The case fan can be wired to the mother board and do an speed step system (slow to fast) depending on heat, same with cpu fan. As for the power light its just an matter of pluging in the wire from frount panel to the mother board pins for pwrled. Asus has an download for your board to get the pin outs.

How i turn off a fan from motherboard

The fans that are plugged into the motherboard are usually powered by the motherboard. To turn them off, simply unplug them as there is always a power flow going through the motherboard and even more to power the fans when the system is running. I would recommend keeping the fan in if possible to help with cooling your PowerEdge 1400 server, but if it must be removed, simply power your server down, and unplug the fan. Make sure your server is powered off before doing this, as you don't want to short anything out or cause a spark.
